I've Just Seen A Face

Chapter 28
Home

That night all I could think about and dream about was Paul. When I woke up, I even imagined he’d be laying next to me. Instead I woke up alone, and only wished I were back in his arms. I dragged myself out of bed and into the shower. This afternoon Davy and I were going to leave for Seattle to visit my parents for a couple days. Last Christmas we spent the time in Manchester with Davy’s family, so this year was my turn. I could already tell it was going to be tough, because I didn’t feel the way I used to about Davy. And although my dad thinks he’s a dork, my mother loves him. It‘s going to be especially hard to fake my feelings, because I just spent the most romantic evening with Paul and want him again more than anything. Davy called around one o’clock and we headed off. It was about a 10 hour drive, so I was planning to sleep some of the way, mostly so I wouldn’t really have to talk with Davy alone.
“So are you ready for this luv?” Davy asked, knowing every visit to my parents was an adventure. I smiled.
“Oh as ready as I always am. I’m just wondering what’s going to happen this time.”
“Yeah, me too.” Davy responded, grabbing my hand. I just turned to look out the window, still thinking about Paul. Why hadn’t I just told him how I really felt? At least he’d know for sure.
“Where were you last night?” Davy asked me. I turned away from the window.
“Did you call or something?” I asked.
“Yeah, and I just kept getting your answer machine.”
“Oh, well, The Beatles were passing through and they had some gifts for me, so I stopped over there for a little.” I said, and saw Davy’s face immediately change. I don’t really know what exactly he was thinking, but I know it had something to do with the question he asked Brittany. There was no way I was going to tell him anything.
“Nothing happened did it? He didn’t try to kiss you again…” Davy asked. I shook my head.
“No, Davy. Nothing happened.” I answered and turned back to look out the window. Luckily, shortly after I did fall asleep.
“Where are we?” I asked stretching.
“Morning luv,” Davy said smiling, “Um, we are a few miles north of Tacoma.” He said.
“Good, almost there.” I said and sat quiet for a while. There was a few more little conversations, but not about anything important. After a few more hours we were finally driving into my parents driveway. As we got out Tom, my older brother came out to greet us.
“Hey sis! Hey, Davy!” He said coming and giving me a huge hug.
“Hi Tom.” I said, hugging him back. He turned and shook hands with Davy.
“Hi Tom, how are you?” Davy asked.
“Good, yourself?” he asked looking at both of us.
“Good. Glad to be here and not driving anymore.” I said, making a face.
“Always a complainer…” Tom said laughing. I shoved him.
“I am not.” I said and laughed. I began walking towards the house, when Tom stopped me.
“Let’s go out back and talk for a little.” he said, leading Davy and I around to the porch in the back of the house.
“Tom, it’s cold outside and I want to see mom and dad.” I said. I noticed there was a look between Davy and Tom.
“Let’s just go in the back for a while, Olivia.” Davy said. I was confused. Something was going on. I didn’t question them and just followed.
‘Olivia! Davy!” I heard a familiar voice yell. I turned around.
“Hi Fig. How are you?” I asked my other brother, as he ran up and gave me a hug which nearly made me fall backwards.
“Good, good! I love you Olivia. I missed you.” He said still hugging me. I laughed and patted his back.
“I missed you too Fig.” I replied. He pulled away from me and ran over to Davy. He, just like my mother, loved Davy. I just smiled as I watched them and turned back towards Tom who looked disturbed.
“Why can’t I go in, Tom?” I asked sitting next to him. He looked at me.
“Mom and Dad are in a bad one…” he said. I turned away because I knew he meant they were in a huge fight. My mother wasn’t always like this. In fact, I don’t know what caused it, but ever since she’s been like this, my dad and her have been getting in fights all the time. Every time they would fight it would get worse and worse. I was pretty close to my parents, even my dad, so to think of them splitting was really hard. Fortunately, they haven’t.
“Well, maybe if they see that I’m here, they’ll stop for a while.” I said and got up. I walked towards the door and opened it. When I walked in I saw my mom sitting at the table crying. My dad was no where in sight.
“Mom? Are you okay?” I asked. She looked up at me tears falling down, and tried to smile.
“Hi sweetie.” I smiled and walked over to her and gave her a hug.
“Anything I can do?” I asked. She looked over her shoulder to the kitchen.
“Can you get me some crackers? I love crackers.” She said. I smiled, that’s my mom. I got her some crackers and she sat there eating and she seemed to calm down.
“What were you fighting about?” I asked her.
“Oh, sweetie, I don’t even know anymore.” she said, “He seems to blow up at every little thing Fig or I do.” she said. Just then my dad walked into the kitchen. I noticed Davy, Fig, and Tom were still outside, but right now I was fine with that.
“Hey, honey, good to see you.” My dad said and walked over to me and gave me a hug. My mom got up from the table and left. I just looked at my dad not saying anything.
“Olivia, don’t worry about it. It’s just a little fight.” he said, hugging me again.
“Dad, your fights used to be little. They keep getting bigger and bigger.” I said wanting to cry.
“Don’t worry, it’s fine. Let’s get your weird boyfriend and brother in here, and we are going to have a good Christmas.” He said and opened the door. “Hey Davy, how are ya?” he asked.
“Good, sir. You?” Davy asked as he came in and stood beside me.
“Good.” My dad said and walked out into the living room. I just stood there staring at the floor.
“Are you okay?” Davy asked taking me in his arms. I tried smiled and a tear fell from my eye.
“Davy it just keeps getting worse. My mom was crying…” I said. Davy pulled me closer and I just rested my head on his shoulder. At this moment I was glad he was here. I needed someone.
“It’ll be okay, love.” Davy said and kissed my forehead, “Come on, let’s go bring our stuff in.” He said and I followed him out. The rest of the day things seemed to be better. Well, as good as they were going to get I guess. My mom and dad didn’t really talk to each other unless they had to. My oldest brother Phil, was at some Math Studies Convention and he wouldn’t be coming him till Christmas Eve. To be perfectly honest, I didn’t mind that much.
“That was a wonderful meal Mrs. Newton.” Davy said rubbing his stomach. She giggled.
“Oh Davy, you can call me Carol, you know that.” She said. Davy smiled.
“Hey, Olivia, I’m going to go get some Schnapps, you wanna join me?” Tom asked. I looked over at Davy.
“Go ahead, luv, I’ll be fine.” he said.
“Yeah, Davy and I are going to play!” Fig yelled, getting up and pulling Davy from the table. I smiled as the two of them left and Tom and I headed for the Liquor Store.
“Did you talk to mom and dad?” he asked.
“Um, just a little. Why?” I asked. He was silent for a few minutes, “Tom what is it?” I asked getting worried.
“Mom was talking to me, and it sounds like they are going to split up after Christmas…” he said. I couldn’t believe it.
“She told you that?” I asked. He nodded.
“I just thought you should know, in case…well, in case they do it earlier. Then you won’t be so lost.” He said. I shook my head.
“Well, I’m still lost. I don’t know how it got this bad.” I said and he agreed. We were at the store so we stopped talking about it for a while.
“We need to get some Brandy and Schnapps, so I’ll get the Brandy and you get the Schnapps.” Tom told me.
“What kind?” I asked.
“I don’t know, something good.” He said and walked away. I rolled my eyes. I’m not even old enough to be in a Liquor Store, and here I was alone looking for some ‘good’ Schnapps. I walked around to the Schnapps area and began to look through the huge selection. I had no idea what to get. There was a guy standing next to me and I almost asked him what kind is best. But before I could say anything, he spoke to me.
“Ma’am, I don’t believe you are old enough to drink.” I froze. I didn’t know what to do. I turned slowly to see the guy smiling at me. It took me a second, but I recognized that smile through his disguise.
“John?” I whispered. His smile grew bigger, and I felt relieved.
“Hello luv,” he said.
“You scared me to death!” I said. Seeing him felt nice. I completely forgot about my parent’s problems.
“I know, you should’ve seen you’re face.” he said and just then another guy dressed the same came behind him looking down at a pack of beer he was going to buy.
“John, come ‘ed, stop flirting. Someone will recognize us soon.” The man spoke. And I knew exactly who it was….
“Settle Paulie, I’m not just flirting with anyone, lookie who it is.” John said winking at me. I rolled my eyes, and Paul looked up at me. Immediately he smiled.
“Olivia!” He said loudly and came over to hug me. I hugged him back closing my eyes. I was so happy that he was here. I opened them and saw John smiling at us. I just returned the smile. Paul pulled away.
“Aren’t you a little young to be in a Liquor Store?” he asked. I rolled my eyes and John began laughing. Paul looked back and forth between John and I, confused.
“What’s so funny?”
“John, just said that, but it was when I didn’t notice who it was, so he scared the crap outta me, because I thought he worked here.” I said laughing.
“Oh, I see. Well, you were lucky.” He said. I nodded.
“So what are you doing in here anyway?” John asked.
“Oh, my brother is around here somewhere,” I said looking around, “We are picking up some stuff for Christmas. I was in charge of getting some Schnapps.” I said making a face. Paul smiled.
“Don’t like it?” He asked.
“Um, never tried it.” I said. He looked surprised.
“Well, get the Butterscotch Schnapps. It’s the best.” Paul said grabbing one for me.
“Where are the others?” I asked.
“Back at the hotel. We were in charge of getting the alcohol.” John replied.
“Party?” I asked.
“Not really, just a few people.” Paul said. Just then I saw Tom and waved him over.
“Hey, there you are. Find some?” He asked and looked at the strangers smiling at him.
“Tom, um,” I lowered my voice, “This is Paul McCartney and John Lennon. Guys, this is my brother Tom.” I said. Tom’s eyes grew.
“Really?” he asked looking closer.
“Yes, sir. It’s the real things.” John said.
“Wow.” Tom said. “I guess it makes sense. I had forgotten that you were with George for a little. We saw it on the news.” Tom said. We nodded, and I glanced and Paul who half smiled. I wished I could take them home with me instead of having Davy there.
“How long are you guys here?” Tom asked.
“Oh till after Christmas.” Paul said, looking over at me.
“Groovy! Maybe you guys could come over to our place some day.” Tom suggested. I looked over at Paul and John.
“I was waiting for our little underage Olivia here to say something…” John said making fun of my age again. I stuck my tongue out.
“Yeah, she’s my little sis.” Tom said grabbing me. I pulled away making a face.
“You guys are mean.” I said and they all laughed.
“So that’s a yes then?” I asked them.
“Definitely.” Paul said, “Here, we’ll pay for those.” he said and reached for the Brandy. He was already holding the Schnapps.
“Oh, man, no you don’t need to.” Tom said, backing up.
“Let him Tom, he wont leave it alone. Trust me.” I said smiling, knowing how Paul was. He just smiled back. They paid for the alcohol and we walked outside where it was freezing.
“Well, I’m glad we ran into you, luv.” Paul said. I nodded.
“Me too.”
“There’s a small party at our hotel if you guys want to join.” John offered.
“Who’s all here Olivia?” Paul asked me.
“Just me and Davy.” I said feeling awkward. He just nodded.
“Well, we should get going, they guys are probably wondering where the hell we are.” Paul said opening his door.
“We’re staying at the Ramada, if you want to come.” John added.
“How do we get in?” Tom asked.
“Don’t worry. If you come just say you are with the Beatles party and they’ll let you in.” Paul said.
“Really?”
“Yeah, they’ll ask for your names and ID to prove it. But we’ll add your names to the list, so you’ll be approved.” Paul explained.
“Sounds good. We’ll probably drop by.” I said. Now I wished Davy wasn’t here. I wanted to spend some time alone with Paul, even though he’s probably not quite himself at parties. In fact, I knew that.
“Alright, bye luv.” Paul said and John waved.
“Nice meeting you Tom.” he said.
“You too.” Tom replied.
“You are so lucky.” he said starting the car. I smiled.
“I know.” We drove home in silence. When we got there Tom broke the news to everyone.
“Hey, guess who I met?” He asked.
“Who?” Fig said, “I love games….Tarzan?” He guessed. I laughed.
“No Fig, The Beatles!!” Tom said excitedly and I smiled. I glanced over at Davy who wasn’t smiling.
“You met the Beatles?” my dad asked.
“Yeah, well, two of them. John Lennon and Paul McCartney. And they invited us to a party tonight.” He said still excited.
“Wow, can I come?” my mom asked, serious.
“Um, I don’t think so mom.” I said trying not to laugh, “It’ll probably just be Davy, Tom, and I.” I said. Davy stood up and walked over to me.
“We’re going?” He asked quietly. I nodded.
“Yeah, for a little.” I said. He just stood quiet and I knew he didn’t want to go.
“You can stay here if you want.” I said, secretly hoping he would.
“Yeah, Davy stay with me!” Fig shouted and began jumping up and down. He looked at Fig and back at me. I grabbed his hand and led him into the other room.
“Davy you can stay here.” I said again.
“I think I should go, in case of Paul.” he said. I shook my head.
“Davy, that’s not going to happen again. Plus, Tom will be with me. And on top of that, Paul will probably be off with other girls.” I said, and I meant it. I knew Paul wouldn’t really be around me, but I’d rather be there then here. Davy stood quiet for a while.
“I guess you’re right.” he said, and I was relieved, “Are you sure it’s okay if I stay here?” he asked.
“Yeah, I can tell you don’t want to go, so I won’t make you. Plus, we wont be there for very long. That stuff isn’t really me.” I said.
“Olivia, lets go!” Tom yelled and I kissed Davy goodbye. I quickly went and changed into something a little more party-ish and went out the door with Tom. We drove to the hotel and got in okay. They had rented out the whole floor and almost every door was open so we had to walk around searching for them.
“Oh my gosh, there’s Mick Jagger…” Tom said. I turned and saw the Rolling Stone. I smiled. Tom loved the Rolling Stones.
“Go talk to him.” I said. Tom looked horrified at that idea. I smiled and pushed him. Although my brother was going to Medical School, he was quite good at singing and playing guitar. I was shocked at how quickly Mick and him began talking. I let him know it was alright, and that I would just go find the Beatles. I walked around kind of eyeing each room to see if I could see them. In almost every room there was some girl and some guy making out. I really hoped I wouldn’t find Paul doing that. In the next room, I finally spotted Paul talking to some really pretty brunette. I walked in and slowly made my way towards him. For not have very many people here, this place was crowded! As I got closer, I kinda just stood in one spot, so he would eventually see me and I wouldn’t have to interrupt. It didn’t take long for him to look up and spot me. I waved and he smiled big. He left the girl, who gave me a dirty look.
“Hey luv!” he said giving me a hug. He was really touchy tonight, but I didn’t mind.
“Hi again, Paul.” I said hugging him in return.
“Are you by yourself?” he asked taking a puff of his cigarette. I shook my head.
“No, my brother came with, but he already left me.” I said looking sad, but then laughed.
“Oh, poor girl.” Paul said, pulling me towards him, “I’ll keep you company.” He said and continued to hold onto me.
“Are you okay Paul?” I asked looking at him. He seemed different.
“Of course! Much better now,” he said smiling, “Why do you ask?” He said looking confused.
“I don’t know, you just seem different.” I said.
“Hm, don’t know what it could be. Wanna dance?” he asked as a slow song began playing.
“Sure,” I said. Paul put his cigarette out and pulled me against him.
“I’m glad you came,” he said looking down at me. I looked up at him and smiled.
“Me too.” I said, and rested my head in the curve of his neck. He smelled like cologne, soap, and cigarettes. In all actually, I found it an intriguing yet, sort of sexy smell. We stayed like this till the song ended and then he led me to one of the couches and we sat down. He grabbed a beer and offered me one.
“I’m too young remember?” I said teasing. He smiled and kissed me quick. I was surprised.
“We were just kidding, luv. I won’t tell anyone.” He said and laughed.
“Well, no thanks anyway. I’ll probably have to drive.” I said.
“You won’t stay?” He asked.
“Overnight?” I asked shocked.
He nodded, “Yeah, we have plenty of rooms…”
“Paul,” I laughed, “I can’t. Davy is back at my parents. I can’t just leave him there.”
“Sure you can.” he said softly and took a drink of his beer.
“Paul, how many of those have you had?” I asked him, looking down at the half empty can in his hand. He looked at me.
“Not very many, why?”
“How many?” I asked again, smiling. I think Paul was drunk.
“Uh,” he thought for a few minutes, “maybe 5 or 6.” he said.
“In the last hour?!” I asked.
“Yeah, but I’m fine.” he said, “I have a high tolerance now.”
“No, I think you are drunk Paul.” I said laughing. He made a face.
“Am not.” I just rolled my eyes. As I looked around I saw the girl Paul left was walking towards us.
“Hey Paul, I wondered where you went.” The girl said, opening Paul legs. I raised my eyebrows and looked at him. He smiled.
“I went here.” He said. The girl moved herself in between Paul’s legs and began feeling him. Surprisingly, Paul moved back and pushed her hand away. She looked confused, and I looked surprised.
“Sorry, luv.” he said, shaking his head.
“What do you mean? I thought you said I was pretty.” she said.
“Oh, you are, but, can’t be doing any of that.” he said and turned to me smiling. I smiled back, still amazed he was saying no to sex.
“Why not? Is she your girlfriend?” She asked and gave me a dirty look.
“Not quite.” he said, pushing her completely away.
“Well, what then?” she asked. He hesitated before speaking.
“Um, we kinda have a thing.” he said and looked at me. I couldn’t help it and I leaned over and gave him a kiss, right in front of the girl. I never thought Paul would be able to control himself, and he did, when we weren’t even officially together. She huffed and moved away from us. After she left, I continued to kiss him and he began leaning closer. I didn’t think anything of it because when I kissed him I didn’t think about anything else. I loved him and wanted him all to myself. Our kiss got deeper and Paul’s hands began to roam. I noticed right away, because he never seemed to do that before. We would always stay reserved with what we did because we weren’t supposed to be doing it, but tonight Paul seemed to be really touchy. I noticed that at the Liquor store and when I got to the party. He kept hugging and getting really close. Now his hands were going up and down my legs and back, and he kept getting deeper in his kiss. I couldn’t pull away just yet because to be honest, his hands on me felt really good. On top of that, he was an extraordinary kisser and that fact that I loved him, made it all the better. So, I continued to let him feel around, and dare I admit it, I began venturing about his body as well. I thought this was going to be the extent of things, but Paul began leaning on me to lay back on the couch so he could be on top of me. As much as I wanted it, I couldn’t because it wasn’t right and my brother could see us at anytime, and he wouldn’t understand at all. I began to push Paul off.
“Luv, what’s wrong?” he asked out of breath.
“I don’t think we should do this.” I told him. Trying to sit up straight. It didn’t happen.
“Why? You kissed me, and I thought you really liked me?” he said. It’s comments like these that make me wonder if he really likes me or if it’s all still an act to get me to have sex with him.
“I do, but-”
“But then what?” he asked and began kissing me again. I pushed him away.
“But this is wrong. We aren’t together Paul, and Davy is back at my house. Even worse, my brother could see us.” I said. He looked really disappointed and sat up. I sat up next to him. He didn’t say anything and all I could think about was if this was all an act. The reason I never told him that I loved him was because being that he’s one of the most famous people in the world, I didn’t know how he acted around other girls, and I had to be absolutely sure before I told him. So when he was all over me and makes comments like “I thought you really liked me” as if saying, “so come on let’s do this”, it’s like, whoa, is he for real? But he had to be? This has to be only because he’s drunk.
“I’m sorry.” he said finally. I looked over to him.
“What?” I asked.
“I’m sorry, for doing that.” he said looking at me. I looked in his eyes and I could tell he was really sorry. But I still couldn’t help feeling this way.
“That’s okay Paul. And it’s not that I don’t want to do that, because I do, I just, well, what we’re doing is bad enough…you know?” I asked hoping he would understand. He nodded his head.
“Yeah, I kinda get this way when I’ve had a few beers in me system.” He admitted. I smiled a little.
“I thought you weren’t drunk?” I asked him. He finally realized what he had just said and smiled himself.
“Well, you caught me. I don’t think I’m quite drunk, but I’m more than buzzing, that’s for sure. So, when you kissed me, opposed to me kissing you, I went for it. I’m sorry again.” he said. I smiled.
“That’s all right. And I’d kiss you again, but I don’t want to cause any more drunkard problems.” I said. He smiled.
“Oh you won’t.” he said with a sly grin.
“Only a small one.” I said and gave him just a quick kiss. We sat there without talking for a while and Paul went to go get some drinks. The only problem was, he didn’t come back. I sat for a while and didn’t see anyone I knew. I got up and started looking for Paul or my brother. Even another Beatle would be fine. With luck, I found Paul, but it’s not what I wanted to see. Not even close. Apparently, Paul’s drunkenness made him too horny for his own good. And if I wasn’t going to put out, then he would find someone who would. I found him on top of the girl he was with in the beginning and they were making out pretty hard. I couldn’t help myself and I walked right up to them. I hit Paul on the back. He flinched and turned his head.
“What the hell?” he said pissed, but quickly changed when he saw me standing above him.
“You are such a jerk.” I said on the brink of angry and painful tears, “Here I thought you were all sincere, but I guess I was wrong. You’ll never change, Paul.” I said and I couldn’t help it. I began to cry. I hated him right now. Just hated him. He began to get off the girl and I knew he was going to try to apologize or something. I didn’t want to hear it so I began to walk away. He got faster.
“Olivia, wait!” He shouted. I had invited the four of them over for breakfast the next morning, but there was no way I wanted him there now. I stopped just for a moment and turned around.
“You can forget about coming over tomorrow too. The others can come, but I don’t want to see you.” I said and with that I left. Luckily, Tom was there on the way out so I grabbed him and asked if we could leave. He saw that I was crying and took me home. He tried to talk about it, but I just wanted to go home and go to bed. First, my parents are fighting when I get here, then I learn that they are splitting up after Christmas, and now, the man I loved turned out to be nothing but a horny fake trying to sleep with me. We arrived home late and I went right to Davy and my room. Davy was sleeping but awoke when I crawled into bed.
“How was the party?” he asked.
“It kinda sucked.” I said, “I wish you were there.” and I was honest; now. If I would have known this was going to happen I would’ve brought Davy along, that way nothing remotely close would’ve came about.
“What happened?” he asked.
“Nothing really. Paul was the only one I found and he was drunk and making out with girls, so I was all alone. It just sucked. Plus, earlier this evening, I found out my parents might split up after Christmas….” I said balling. Davy brought me into his arms and held me close. It felt good actually to be in his arms. I was so hurt and angry that Davy and I ended up making love that night. In a way I was avenging Paul (even though he had no idea), because it made me feel better. I fell asleep in Davy’s arms, trying with all my might not to think about Paul.
