I've Just Seen A Face

Chapter 30
Home

It was the day before New Years Eve, when the next call from the Beatles came.
“Hello?” I answered.
“Hello, Olivia,” Paul greeted.
“Hey Paul, how’s it going?” I asked.
“Pretty good, yourself?”
“Great, thanks.” I said.
“Well I’m just calling to let you know that we’ll be in Malibu probably around midnight.” he said.
“Oh really?”
“Yeah, have you thought of anything for us to do on New Years Eve?” he asked me. I’d been trying to think all this week, but nothing came. I guess we’ll just have to go to a party or something.
“No, not really….have you?” I asked hoping he had.
“Well, me and the guys were talking, and we thought maybe the whole group could drive to Los Angeles and spend it there.” he suggested.
“Yeah, that sounds good. Would we drive back here then late?” I asked wondering where we would be staying.
“Well, that’s the other thing. We thought we’d just rent out a beach house and we’d stay there. That way we could have our own party if we wanted or whatever and there would be plenty of room and things to do. We’d drive back New Years Day sometime.”
“That’s a good idea Paul.” I said.
“Thanks, but I can’t take the credit. It was mostly George’s idea.” he said.
“I see, at least you’re honest.” I said laughing.
“I try.” he said.
“Are we going to just follow you guys down there then, or how are we going to do that?” I asked.
He laughed, “We thought of that too. We’ll just rent a limo and go together.” he said.
“Wow, sounds cool!” I said.
“Good…I’ve got to go luv, talk to you later.” Paul said.
“Yep, see ya, Paul.” I said and didn’t want to hang up. Every time I talked to him I never wanted to stop. Same with being with him. I never wanted to leave. I really hope tonight won’t be too difficult. I spent the rest of the day with Davy, and went to bed rather early. I wanted to get enough sleep so I could be up all night the next day.

When I woke up the next day, my room was filled with sun. I turned on the TV and it was already 73 degrees. Usually California this time of year is around 60 degrees, but this year we were having a rather warm winter. John called shortly after I woke up and informed me to be ready to leave at around 2pm, so I passed the news onto the others. It was about noon, when I was finally ready, so I began to pack. I packed a set of ‘party’ clothes just in case, my swim suit for the pool or ocean, and some regular clothes with a sweatshirt for the night. I was getting excited. Two o’clock came around and The Beatles were at the Monkees apartment to get us.
“Why are we leaving so early?” Emily asked.
“What do you mean?” John asked in return.
“Well, New Years Eve is like a night thing, and we are going to get there in like an hour.” she said.
“Well, Emily, we thought that maybe you’d like to shop at the stores or something.” John said.
“Oh I see.”
“Why, don’t you like us Emily?” Paul asked with puppy eyes. She shook her head.
“Not you and John.” she whined. Paul and John made a face but laughed.
“And why not?” John asked.
“Because you guys always tease me.” she whined. Everybody laughed.
“Yeah, by the way, where is your cat Emily? I’m kinda hungry.” Paul kidded. Emily squealed.
“Paul!! Stop it, you teaser!” she said. He just laughed, along with everyone else. I was seated right across from him and during the hour drive, we would steal glances at one another every so often. We made it to Los Angeles at around 3:30pm.
“So what does everyone want to do first?” Brittany asked as we all walked into the house.
“I don’t know, we could do a lot of things. We could shop, we could nap, we could sit around and talk, we could go to the beach, we could swim in the pool, we could just stare at each other, there are no limits.” Paul said acting stupid. Him and John snickered.
“You’re weird.” Brittany said.
“You didn’t think so before.” he said raising his eyebrows. It bothered me slightly how he was being kinda flirty and bringing up him and Brittany, but I knew it was what we had to do. Anyway, I’m sure I’ll be doing things with Davy that Paul won’t like.
“Let’s not talk about that.” Micky said.
“I was only kidding,” Paul said apologetically. Micky just half smiled.
“Let’s go swimming,” Peter said, thankfully changing the subject.
“Yeah, and we could play volleyball or something,” Davy suggested. So it was settled. We were going to play Water Polo in the pool. There were enough rooms to have two to a room, so Davy and I roomed together. I followed him upstairs and we got changed into our swimsuits. Before heading down to the pool, Davy pulled me over to him and kissed me.
“I love you,” he said smiling. I just smiled and kissed him in return.
“Let’s go,” I said taking his hand. He didn’t come right away.
“Everything will be fine tonight right?” he asked looking into my eyes. I smiled.
“Yes, everything will be fine Davy, don’t worry.” I said and led him down to the pool. The majority of the group was already down there.
“What took so long?” Brittany asked.
“Nothing,” I said getting into the pool.
“So, how are we going to do teams?” Mike asked.
“We’re going to draw them,” Paul said walking from one of the tables with a bunch of paper pieces in his hands. He came near Davy, me, and John and sat at the edge of the pool putting his feet in the water.
“Who wants to draw?” he asked.
“I will,” John offered and drew the first name.
“Ringo,” he said and continued drawing names. There were six people on each team and the teams were as follows: Ringo, Sara, Micky, Emily, George, Davy and Brittany, me, Paul, John, Mike, and Peter. I could tell Davy wasn’t too thrilled that we were on opposite teams and that Paul was on mine, but he was just going to have to live with it. My team ended up winning the hour long game.
“Good game guys,” Paul said giving high fives to us all. He walked over to me and smiled slightly before giving me a high five. I smiled back. So far, so good.
“Anyone hungry?” George asked.
“Yeah, starving!” Peter replied. We all got dried off and changed into our regular clothes. Then we drove to one of the more fancier restaurants. Surprisingly, I didn’t sit next to Paul. I was across from him. We talked like we always do and soon it was time to head back to the hotel. The Beatles asked if it was okay to invite some people over for a party and we said yes, so within about a half an hour, people, whom we’ve never seen before (mostly friends of The Beatles) were flooding in the house. I noticed the majority of them were girls. One in particular hung around Paul. Within an hour, the house was packed.
“Wow, what a party huh?” Davy said. I nodded.
“Yeah….you wanna dance?” I asked him. He agreed and headed out to the middle where everyone was dancing. We danced to about 2 songs when I backed up into someone. I turned around apologizing.
“Oh, no that’s fine.” She said smiling. I looked up and it was the girl who was hanging around Paul. Sure enough, he was her dance partner.
“Olivia, I going to go get something to drink, I’ll be right back.” Davy said. I nodded.
“I think it’s impossible to dance without hitting someone.” she laughed. She was really pretty and seemed really nice. I looked over at Paul who was just standing there, face emotionless.
“Yeah, I guess that’s true.” I said smiling in return, even though there was a funny feeling inside. It wasn’t jealously or anger. I think it was pain.
“Hey, sweetie, I’m gonna go get something to drink too…” the girl said to Paul. He smiled.
“Alright. I think I’m gonna dance still. If that’s okay?” he asked. She nodded and kissed him on the cheek. I turned away.
“Wanna dance?” he asked, as predictably a slow song began. And for some reason, the lyrics to this song hit home. It was ’Dream, Dream, Dream’ by the Everely Brothers…. (Here’s the lyrics in case you don’t know)

Dream, dream, dream, dream

Dream, dream, dream, dream

When I want you, in my arms

When I want you, and all your charms.

Whenever I want you, all I have to do, is,

Dream, dream, dream, dream

When I feel blue, in the night,

And I need you, to hold me tight,

Whenever I want you, all I have to do, is

Dream

I can make you mine, taste your lips of wine

Anytime, night or day.

Only trouble is, gee whiz,

I dreamin’ my life away.

I need you so, that I could die,

I love you so, and that is why,

Whenever I want you, all I have to do, is

Dream, dream, dream, dream,

Dream

I can make you mine, taste you lips of wine

Anytime, night or day

Only trouble is, gee whiz,

I’m dreaming my life away.

I need you so, that I could die

I love you so, and that is why,

Whenever I want you, all I have to do, is

Dream, dream, dream, dream (repeat)

I looked back at him, hurt. Things were taking to long, and so he’s finally found someone…

“Sure,” I said and he took me into his arms. We danced silently for a while, but I needed to know what was going on.

“She looks nice.” I said, as casually as I could.

“Yeah, she is.” he replied.

“What’s her name?” I asked.

“Megan.”

“Are you a couple?” I asked pulling back and looking at him sadly. He looked at me for a second and then looked somewhere behind me.

“I don‘t know,” he said looking back at me.

“Well she’s really pretty, and seems really nice.” I said again. He just nodded, “how long have you known her?” I asked.

“Not very long.”

“So are you guys just dating then?” I asked still wondering what was going on with the two of them.

“No, not really. This is actually only the second time we’ve hung out. I’ve seen her at a few press conferences, and talked to her there, but other than that I haven’t really hung out with her.”

“So she’s a reporter?” I asked shocked.

“No, not quite. It’s hard to explain.” he said looking at me. I was still hurt so I looked down to the floor trying to avoid eye contact with him. He pulled my chin up with his hand.

“Olivia, you don’t need to worry.” he said softly smiling. I could barely hear him over the music and people.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“Well, you seem a bit hurt. And I just want you to know that you have nothing to worry about. I still care for you the same, if not more because I’m missing you.”

“Then who is she?” I asked confused.

“No one really. A friend mostly," he explained.

“Really?” I asked. He smiled.

“Really. Chances are, better than none, that after this I’m not going to see her again. I just didn’t want to be alone on New Years.”

“So are you going to sleep with her?” I asked suddenly confused and upset. He laughed and shook his head.

“Of course not! Now why would I do that?” he asked me. My comment suddenly sounded stupid. I smiled.

“I spose that was a dumb thing to think.” I said.

“Yeah it was. I just meant at the party. You’ll be with….Davy, and everybody else in your big group seems to have someone. And in mine, well, they’ll just go find a girl.”

“But I bet they’re going to sleep with them.” I pointed out. He nodded.

“Probably, but not me. That’s the difference. Like I said, she’s not spending the night, I just want someone to hang around and dance with. I can’t dance with you all night.” he said smiling. I laughed.

“That’s right you can’t.” Davy said behind Paul. Paul was so tall and Davy was so short that I didn’t even see him coming.

“Oh Davy, settle down. I was only kidding.” Paul said letting go of me. It was then that I noticed that ’Dream. Dream, Dream’ was over with and Paul and I were still in each others arms.

“Well, I didn’t think it was funny.” Davy said coming over to me. Paul made a face rather mean face.

“You need to chill out Davy. I think you are a little overprotective of Olivia…” Paul said, then turned to me, “We’re going to go play some pool if you want to join us.” he offered.

“Thanks, maybe in a little bit.” I said, still smiling.

“Alright,” Davy and I continued to dance a bit more. He seemed upset with me, but I didn’t say anything. We weren’t even doing anything. Just dancing.

“Davy do you want to go play pool?” I asked him, knowing he would say no.

“I don’t know. I do, but I don’t really want to with Paul.” he said. I rolled my eyes.

“Davy, you just need to learn to ignore him. Now come on.” I said leading him away from the dance floor. John, Paul, Brittany, and Peter were already playing a game. When we walked over to them I noticed Megan getting rather close to some guy. I wonder what happened.

“Nice of you to join us.” John said smiling.

“Yeah, even though I don’t know how to play pool.” I laughed.

“You don’t know how to play pool?” Ringo asked watching the game. I shook my head.

“Yeah, we always our own little version at home.” Davy said.

“How do you play it?” John asked, “ Cuz, we’ll just play that.” Peter explained the game them. It was a lot like pool, only instead of sticks you use one of the balls. And the only rule was that you get all the other balls into the holes, except yours of course.

“Who wants to play first?” John asked.

“I will,” I said.

“Me too,” George said.

“How many can you have?” Paul asked.

“About four.” Peter replied.

“Then I’ll play too.” Paul said.

“And me.” Peter said last. So we began playing. I’m usually not very good at this game, but tonight I wasn’t doing too bad. There was still music playing and one song in particular caught my attention. It was one I’ve never heard.

(She’s got the Devil in her heart)

Oh her eyes, they tantalize

(She’s gonna tear your heart apart)

Oh her lips, they really thrill me

I’ll take my chances, for romance is,

So important to me.

She’ll never hurt me, she won’t desert me.

She’s an angel sent to me.

With just the first bit of lyrics I looked up at George. I was slightly hurt. Paul standing next to him was just looking at me, as if to say ‘I’m sorry’. I gave George a look asking if this was about me and he nodded slightly. He also seemed to feel bad. The song continued…..

(She’s got the Devil in her heart)

No, no, this I can’t believe.

(She’s gonna tear your heart apart)

No, no, nay will she deceive.

I can’t believe that she’ll ever, ever go.

Not when she hugs me and says she loves me so.

She’ll never hurt me, she won’t desert me,

(Listen can’t you see.)

(She’s got the Devil in her heart)

Oh, no, no, no, this I can’t believe.

(She’s gonna tear your heart apart)

No, no, nay will she deceive.

(Don’t take chances, if your romance is,

So important to you)

She’ll never hurt me, she won’t desert me

She’s an angel sent to me.

(She’s got the Devil in her heart)

Oh, no, no, no, no this I can’t believe

(She’s gonna tear your heart apart)

No, no, nay will she deceive

(She’s got the Devil in her heart)

Though she’s an angel sent to me.

(She’s got the Devil in her heart)

Though she’s an angel sent to me.

I stopped playing and just continued to look at George. Did he really think that about me? He could tell I was slightly hurt.

“I was really torn up and mad when I wrote that.” George explained. I just smiled sadly.

“I’m really sorry I hurt you George,” I said sincerely. He just smiled.

“Yeah, well I’m glad that you didn’t just stay with me anyway because I am a Beatle.”

“I would never do that.” I said. Davy and Paul just continued to look at me, and I finally took my turn to break the silence. Pretty soon it was about ten to midnight and our group all got together for a New Years toast. We danced and partied a few more hours and then people began to leave. When the house was totally empty it was about 3am.

“That was quite a night guys!” Brittany said.

“Yeah, that was fun.” I agreed. Everyone else nodded tiredly.

“So who’s gonna clean up this mess?” Sara asked.

“Ah, we’ll do that tomorrow before we leave. I’m dead tired.” Paul said. I had forgotten that they hadn’t had much sleep today.

“Okay, well thanks for the party guys. Again, it was fun and we’ll see you in the morning.” Brittany said as she and Micky headed upstairs.

“Yeah, goodnight everyone.” Sara, Emily, Peter, and Mike said following Micky and Brittany. Davy and I said goodnight to the Beatles and went upstairs as well. When we got into our room I began changing into my pjs.

“Happy New Year love,” Davy said hugging me and giving me a kiss.

“Yeah, happy New Years,” I replied and returned the kiss. We kissed a little more, and although we were already in the New Year, Davy thought it would be romantic if we were to bring it in by making love. I couldn’t really say no, or he’ll wonder what was wrong. So I agreed. It was a romantic idea, I just wish it was with someone else. Someone whom I really loved. We had been making love for about 10 minutes when there was a knock at our door.

“I’m coming in!” A voice said. I couldn’t tell who it was. Davy didn’t try to move, but I pushed him off and covered myself with the covers as best I could, just as Paul walked in.

“Paul?!” I said out of breath, shocked, and embarrassed.

“What the heck are you doing in here?” Davy asked annoyed.

“Um, we are all trying to sleep next door, and well,” he cleared his throat and I could tell he was uncomfortable. So was I; big time., “you guys are kinda loud. So they all voted me to come tell you guys to shut up.” he said. I just looked at him, my face getting hot. He wasn’t enjoying this one bit, and I think I saw a hint of hurt in his face. I don’t blame him. I felt like yelling that I didn’t want to do this, and I’d rather be with him, but we all know I couldn’t.

“Oh, sorry, we’ll try to keep it down.” Davy said. Paul smiled sadly.

“Alright, thanks. Goodnight.” he said and left the room. After that I really didn’t feel like continuing. Davy tried but I told him I was rather embarrassed and getting tired. He let it go and I laid there trying to sleep. That was probably the most embarrassing thing that had ever happened to me.

“Good morning everyone, how did you sleep?” George asked as we all were downstairs ready to pick up the mess. Everyone nodded and said good.

“Fun night, there guys?” John asked Davy and I, snickering. Davy rolled his eyes and after looking over at Paul, I gave John a look to stop talking about it. He got the hint.

“Well, let’s get to cleaning.” Paul said obviously getting away from the subject. The cleaning took a good couple hours. Afterwards we left to go back to Malibu.

“How long are you guys here?” I asked them.

“About a week or so. We are on holiday.” Ringo answered.

“Cool!” I said. We drove the rest of the way talking every so often. The Beatles went back to their regular hotel and said they would call me later on. The girls went home to unpack, and The Monkees just stopped at my apartment while I set my stuff down before going to theirs.

“It’ll just be a minute, I’ll be right back.” I said walking into my bedroom as the Monkees waited for me in my living room. I walked back to where they were waiting, ready to go.

“Okay, we can go to your place now.” I said walking over to Davy, trying to put a bracelet on as I walked.

“Olivia, what is this?” he asked me. I looked up and I couldn’t believe what I saw. Peter as usual, snooped through my stuff and found something not meant to be found. I looked down at the sheet of papers, with pictures of Davy on one side and Paul on the other.

“Um, where did you find that?” I asked.

“In your drawer.” Peter answered. They all just looked at me, and knew I was in trouble.

“What is this Olivia?” Davy asked again.

“Um, it was a long time ago. I was confused and so I was doing comparison things. It was Brittany’s idea and this was one of them.” I told him. He didn’t say anything.

“Davy don’t be mad, this was when I was with George. I knew I wasn’t in love with him, but I didn’t know who I liked more between you and Paul. But then I realized I loved you, so I forgot about Paul. I just forgot to throw that away….” I explained further. He just looked at me.

“Okay, whatever. Let’s go.” he said and got up. I followed him out of my apartment and into theirs. I spent only a couple hours there and then spent the rest of the day at home. I still couldn’t apprehend that they saw that. Oh well, maybe it was just one step closer to Davy breaking up with me.
