I've Just Seen A Face

Chapter 33
Home

Hm, I don’t even know where to begin when it comes to Greenland…..
It started like any other weird trip…we just popped there, but in the beginning it was just me, the girls, and the Monkees. The Beatles didn’t come till later.
“Where are we this time?” Micky asked as we wondered around in the middle of nowhere.
“Now how would any of us know that?” Sara replied sarcastically. Micky scowled at her.
“Shut up Sara,” he said. We continued walking, and I could feel Davy’s eyes on me every so often. I thought about just talking to him now, since it didn’t really matter where I did it, but I had a lot on my mind. I didn’t know exactly how I was going to tell him or what I would say, and I was also thinking about what it will be like when Paul and I can finally be together without hiding. I was thinking realistically, opposed to how I would ‘want it to be’, like I did with George. Lastly, and probably most importantly, I was thinking about the last month. It was nearing the end of the month, and I hadn’t gotten my period. Davy and I had used protection every time, and this has never happened to me before, so I was really worried. I was only 19, so I was not even close to being ready for a kid. Secondly, Davy and I weren’t going to be together anymore. And thirdly, what would Paul think if he found out I was pregnant with Davy’s baby? I hadn’t taken a pregnancy test, so when I got the chance, even if it’s here, I was going to do it. If it was negative, I would rejoice like I’ve never done before and if it was positive…I don’t have any idea what I would do….
“Olivia, are you okay?” I heard Brittany ask. I looked up and we were stopped.
“Why?” I asked.
“You seem really distant,” she said staring at me as if trying to figure out what it was. I shrugged.
“I’m just tired and got a lot on my mind. That’s all.” I told her. She nodded.
“Well, it looks like we’re nearing a town. So let’s keep moving.” She said as we began walking again. The first place we stopped was a gas station for a bathroom break and directions. We met a guy here who offered a room at his place until we found a way back home. There wasn’t really another option so we agreed. His name was Jared, and he was a rather scruffy looking guy, but very nice. He needed to stop at the grocery store for some beer, so I took the advantage to look for a pregnancy test. I wondered off so I was alone and snuck it to the front, purchasing it and hiding it away in my purse. We all met Jared back at his car and drove to his house.
“Make your selves at home,” he said as we walked it. It was a pretty small house, but it worked. It was better than sleeping outside.
“Thanks,” Mike said. It was getting late and we were all whooped. When it was my turn for the bathroom, I grabbed my purse and locked the door. I took out the pregnancy test and just stared at it. There were a million thoughts running through my head and I was scared to death to do it. I forced my self to and waited 5 minutes for the reading. As I leaned on the wall waiting, I looked at myself in the mirror. ‘What’s going to happen if I’m pregnant?’ was all I could think. The 5 minutes seemed to last forever, and when it was up I slowly looked down at the white stick in my hand. In the center I saw two lines. My heart froze. I knew what it meant, but I couldn’t comprehend it. I frantically grabbed the box and read the back. My assumptions were right. I was pregnant. I dropped the stick and box, and slid to the ground. I couldn’t believe this. What was I going to tell my parents? What was I going to tell Davy? And what was I going to tell Paul?
“Olivia, are you okay in there?” Emily asked knocking on the door. It was then I realized how long I’d been in the bathroom.
“Yeah, I’m almost done,” I said quickly grabbing the stick and box. I didn’t want to put it in the garbage, so I shoved them back in my purse (gross I know). I pulled myself together and opened the door.
“Sorry, Emily. I just wasn’t feeling too good.” I said smiling as best I could.
“That’s okay.” She said smiling in return. When Emily found out, she would never think of me the same, “By the way, The Beatles are here.” She said as she went into the bathroom and shut the door.
“What?” I asked. She was already in the bathroom, so I didn’t get an answer. I walked out into the big room we were all sleeping in, and saw the Beatles relaxed throughout the room.
“Hey Olivia,” John said.
“Uh, hi. What are you guys doing here?” I asked. This cannot be happening.
“Don’t really know. Same as you guys I spose.” Paul answered.
“They seem to follow us everywhere,” Brittany said acting annoyed. They all laughed at that, but I still couldn’t believe it. As everyone talked, I laid silent facing the opposite direction, and slowly I began to cry softly. They called my name a couple of times, but I acted as if I was asleep so they stopped. Before I knew it I fell asleep.

When I woke up, Paul and Micky were the only ones still sleeping and everyone else wasn’t in sight. I sat up and stretched. Then the pain of last night shot through my head. I had forgotten all about that. I went out to find the others and they informed me that we had to leave. Something was going on with Jared and we couldn’t stay. But he gave a case of beer to John, for sympathy. Nice.
“I’m really sorry you guys. I wish there was more I could do. There’s a chance that you could come back later, so if you want to do that you can. But I can’t make any guarantees.” He said.
“That’s fine. It was kind of you anyway. Thanks, man,” Mike said and we were out the door. We needed money if we were to stay at a hotel, so we all figured we’d try and find jobs. I was silent again, not wanting to talk to anyone. No one else really talked that much either. We were such a talkative group when all together….not. It had only been about 20 minutes when John and Paul began talking.
“Hey, John, can I have one of those beers?” Paul asked. John laughed.
“No, he gave ‘em to me.” He said. Paul smiled.
“Oh, sod off John. He just handed them to you, now please give me one.” Paul asked again. John shook his head.
“No, they’re mine,” Paul looking frustrated gave up on the beer.
“Well, can I have a ciggie then?” he asked. John shook his head again.
“No, those are mine too,” Looking at Paul I could tell he was getting pissed.
“John, stop this crap and give me one!” he said.
“No,” was all John said.
“How bout a joint?” he asked.
“No, Paul, now shut up!” John said getting really mad. We all looked at each other wondering what was going on.
“They’re not yours John, they’re all of ours.” Paul said mad.
“No they aren’t, Paul, now shut the hell up.” And with that Paul went for John and the two of them began fighting.
“Whoa! Stop it you two!” George shouted trying to get them apart.
“Yeah, get off of me you twit!” John yelled pushing Paul. That didn’t help; it in fact made Paul pissed even more. With the help of George, Ringo, and Micky, the two of them were apart. They stayed pissed at each other for quite a while, Paul getting none of what he asked for, but as time passed they calmed down and got back to normal. Whatever it was was done. Thankfully. We found a little place to rest, and Davy approached me. He hadn’t talked to me since the day before yesterday, so I was surprised he was coming over to me.
“Are you okay?” he asked, as he came next to me. I looked over at him and smiled.
“Why do you ask?”
“You seem very distracted, and I thought I heard you crying last night.” He told me. I decided to tell him.
“Davy, there’s something I need to tell you.” I started.
“Yeah?” I paused before continuing, not knowing what his reaction was gonna be.
“I skipped a period,” I said hoping that’s all I would have to say. He just looked at me, and I could tell that he thought of it.
“And?” he said.
“And…I bought a test yesterday at the grocery store….it was positive.” I said so he could barely hear me. The words just wouldn’t come out any louder. He froze and continued to stare.
“You’re pregnant?” he asked. I nodded as tears filled my eyes. Without hesitation he grabbed me into his arms and just held onto me. I relaxed in the comfort of his arms, but when I opened my eyes, I saw Paul looking in our direction…..I still had to tell him somehow.
“Can we keep this a secret for a while?” I whispered, still looking at Paul. Davy pulled me back so he could look at me.
“Of course,” he said and kissed me on the forehead. It was time to move on so Davy and I headed back over to the rest of the group. We continued to our next rest spot, where Paul confronted me.
“Can we take a walk?” He asked. I nodded and we walked away from the others.
“What was going on back there?” he asked me.
“What do you mean?”
“With Davy, you looked pretty, ah, close,” he said, eyebrows raised.
“Yeah, Paul, something’s come up,” I said not wanting to do this.
“Great,” he said walking in front of me. I grabbed his arm and turned him around.
“Paul it’s not like that,” I said. I knew he thought that I went back to Davy because I thought I still loved him.
“Really? Then what was it Olivia?” Paul asked as he began to go on with his ‘not really wanting to be with him’ speech.
“I’m pregnant Paul,” I interrupted him. He stopped and just looked at me.
“What?” he asked.
“I’m pregnant,” I said tears filling my eyes again. He walked over to me.
“You know that for sure?” he asked and I could tell he was hurt.
“Well, I skipped a period and I took at test last night. It was positive.” I said.
“You should take another one,” he suggested.
“Why?”
“Well, I don’t like to bring this up, but, a couple of girls I’ve been with have thought they were pregnant because of a test. They did it a second time and it turns out it was wrong the first. You should take it again to be sure, or at least see a doctor.” He said. I thought about it and it made sense. This had never happened to me before so I didn’t even think of that.
“You’re right; I’ll buy one next time we’re at a grocery store. I think I have that much money left.” I said. We walked back, and continued into the next town. We indeed stopped at a grocery store for more bathroom breaks, and I managed to buy another test. Next we went to a job finding place. There was a whole list of jobs, but not good ones.
“I could be a waitress,” Emily said.
“Yeah, me too,” Brittany said. I looked for a job in that, but there were only two hiring (it was a smaller town). Sara found a job at some retail place along with Mike and Micky, and Ringo. Peter found a job painting model cars.
“There’s only crap for jobs left,” John said continuing to look at the leftovers.
“Hey, I could be a food tester,” George said. We all laughed, that was perfect. There were three of us left, and three jobs. There was a fashion designer, a mechanic, and a stripper. As Davy, Paul, and I read over the three, I saw the two of them look up at me.
“What?” I asked.
“Well, we know what you’ll be doing….” Paul said smirking. Davy glared at him.
“The stripper? Sorry, that’s not going to happen,” I said refusing. There was no way I was going to be a stripper.
“Olivia, you have to,” Davy said. I turned surprised. Davy was pushing me to be the stripper?
“I’ll be the mechanic; Davy will be the fashion designer. We can’t be strippers Olivia,” Paul said.
“Why do I have to be the fashion designer?” Davy asked.
“Cuz you’re more girly than I am,” Paul replied, getting a laugh outta John. Davy became pissed, but held himself. He turned back to me.
“Olivia, you’d probably make the most money of us all, and we need it to get out of here. Or at least a place to stay. Please,” Davy begged. I looked around and for some reason looked at Paul. He just looked at me and I knew he agreed with Davy. I thought about it and I knew they were right. It was going to be weird though. Davy and I were technically back together because I was pregnant. So to be stripping when I had a boyfriend and a baby? That’s just wrong
“You guys will all be working, so it’ll be fine if I don’t,” I said trying to get out of it one more time.
“Whatever Olivia, don’t be lazy. Just do it.” Brittany said. I knew she had been a stripper once a long time ago, but I don’t think she would switch places with me. I had no choice.
“Fine, I’ll be a stripper,” I said, “But no one can come see me.” All the Beatles groaned jokingly.
“Very funny guys,” I said pretending to laugh. We headed to our job destination, and got the jobs. Unfortunately, a couple of us had to start tonight if it was possible so we could buy a hotel room. That couple of people were, me, Brittany, and Davy. When I walked into the Strip Bar, I wanted to just turn around and leave, but I knew I couldn’t. I did my thing, for about an hour and a half. As embarrassing as it was, I did manage to make $700. Not bad at all. That was quite a bit of money back then. I was surprised. I even had to take lessons on how to show my body off properly. Not that I didn’t know how, but in front of 50 some horny men….it was a little hard. As I danced for all those men, I found myself wishing to see Paul. It was odd because one part of me wanted him to see me, but the other wanted him to not even know when I was doing it.
“How was it?” Davy asked as I returned to the hotel.
“Uh, weird,” I said glancing at Paul. He just smiled.
“Would you be willing to do a favor for my job?” Davy asked me.
“What?”
“Well, I don’t get money for my designs unless I have a model for them…and well,…I said you would do it.” I immediately became a little angry. First he makes me be a stripper, and now I have to model his clothes for him. And to make it worse, the more revealing his clothes were the more money he got. Jeez, I might as well walk around naked everywhere holding out a can for people to put money in!
“Whatever, just let me go to the bathroom first,” I said getting up.
“Thank you luv,” he said. I just smiled and grabbed my purse. Before I went into the bathroom and locked the door once more, I glanced at Paul again. He was the only one who knew what I was doing. I completed the test one more time and waiting this time didn’t seem so bad. Before I knew it the 5 minutes were up and I was again looking down at the stick. This time it was different. There was only one line, meaning I wasn’t pregnant. My heart began beating fast as I was immediately relieved. Again I slid to the floor as I sat smiling, tears of joy running down my cheeks. I was once more with Davy, so again I’ll have to break it off, but that was the least of my worries. I was not pregnant. I couldn’t wait to tell Paul the news.
