Chapter 13

The next morning I woke up to the phone ringing. I laid there thinking Paul was going to get it, but he didn’t even move. I opened my eyes and shook Paul softly.
“Paul, the phone is ringing,” I said looking at the clock. It was only 8am. He moaned and rolled over on his back, eyes still shut.
“Hm, can you get it for me?” he asked. I was going to protest knowing it was for him (no one would call for me), but I didn’t want to miss the person. I leaned across Paul, stayed there, and picked up the phone.
“Hello?” I answered feeling slightly weird answering Paul’s phone. But as he would tell me, ‘it’s yours now too.’
“Oh, hey Olivia,” I heard John say.
“Hi John,” I said, “How are you?”
“Confused,” he said. Oh no, I didn’t want to talk about ‘the inccident’ now, even if Paul was sleeping, “Is Paul there?” he asked.
“Uh, he’s sleeping,” I started.
“Okay, so tell me what’s going on?” he asked. I hesitated and looked at Paul, snoring softly.
“What do you mean?” I asked trying not to say anything that would sound suspicious.
“What’s going on with you? You wanted me not that long ago, I try to tell you that you don’t and that you love Paul, you tell me no, and now you’re all normal again.” He said.
“Yeah, I don’t really know what that was either,” I said looking up at Paul. He moved his arms around me laying on him, but luckily didn’t wake up, “I think it was just one of those weird things. I’m sorry you had to go through that…I feel horrible.” I said.
“Yeah, you feel horrible? I feel like shit now, what am I supposed to tell Paul?” he asked me.
“I wouldn’t.” I said.
“What?”
“Don’t tell him. He would take it the wrong way; I mean what were you supposed to do?”
“Um, not kiss you back.” He said and I cringed remembering.
“Yes well, that didn’t happen and I haven’t said anything about that. He’s forgotten about it. So I wouldn’t say anything.” I told him.
“Well, that’s what I was going to do anyway, but I’m glad you agree….” He said, “Alright, now that that’s settled, wake Macca up.” He said.
“Okay,” I said setting the phone on the bed next to Paul and me, “Hey Paul, John’s on the phone for you.” I said. Paul didn’t react at all. I laughed. I should’ve known. I scooted up more and kissed him softly. He moved his arms up to stretch, finally opening his eyes. He smiled.
“Well, good morning love,” he said. I smiled back.
“Good morning,” I said.
“What time is it?” he asked stretching again.
“Ten after 8,”
“Eight in the morning? Why are you up so early, especially after last night?” he said smiling devilishly. I laughed.
“Shh, John’s on the phone,” I whispered feeling embarrassed. His grin went away as he laughed instead.
“Ha-ha, whoops,” he said, still laughing. He knew I was the kind that didn’t like others to know about our sex life, now that we have one. I laughed, “Sorry,” he said apologetically.
“Don’t worry about it, he wants to talk to you,” I told him picking up the phone and handing it to him. I started to get off of him.
“Where are you going?” he asked me before answering.
“Bathroom,” I said. He smiled.
“Oh,” I laughed and he started talking John. I pulled one of the sheets off the bed and wrapped it around me as I walked to the bathroom. I could hear him laughing as he talked to John. I would not want to ruin any of that by telling him about John and me. I came out just as Paul was hanging up with John.
“What’s up?” I asked, crawling back in bed with him.
“We’re gonna record today.” He said putting his arm around me.
“What time?” I asked.
“Uh, ten,” he said. I smiled, “I’m sorry,” he said.
“For what?”
“For leaving you again,” he said. I laughed.
“Ah, it’s alright.” I told him.
“Hey, last night I was thinking.” Paul started.
“About what?”
“Mexico. They’ll be leaving for the tour in a few days, and we will be meeting them in 2 weeks. I thought maybe tomorrow or the day after, we could head to Malibu, get your things, bring them back here, and then head out to Mexico.” He said. I nodded.
“Yeah, that sounds like a good idea.” I told him, “Will you get a flight out of here tomorrow even?” I asked forgetting all about their private planes. He laughed.
“Yes, that is one of the beauties of being a Beatle love,” he said. I smiled.
“You know, it’s funny, I forget sometimes that you are a Beatle,”
“That’s a good thing. That means you don’t just want me for my fame and money!” he said laughing.
“True,” I said. Paul looked at the clock and it was 8:35am, “why did John call you so early?” I asked.
“Because, ever since I was late for the first meeting with Brian, they always call me like two hours ahead of time to make sure I’ll be there on time.” He said shaking his head. I laughed.
“Oh yes, I remember reading that. But you are still like that…” I said. He pouted.
“I can’t help the fact that I want to be clean and look nice,” he said. I kissed his cheek.
“I know, I like it. It’s just kinda funny sometimes.”
“Well, speaking of clean, let’s go shower,” he said getting up. I followed him to the bathroom and we showered. I put on one of the new outfits I got with Patti yesterday as Paul put on a dark blue dress shirt and black pants. I smiled. He did always dress nice, even when he was just recording in a stuffy studio.
“Is that a new outfit?” he asked buttoning his shirt. I adjusted the mini dress and curtsied.
“Yeah, you like?” I asked.
“Turn around, let me look at the back of ya,” he said. I smiled and turned around, “Hm mm, very nice indeed.” He said coming towards me and kissing me.
“Thanks, I’m glad you approve,” I said.
“Yeah, but I don’t want you leaving the house,” he said. I was confused.
“Why?”
“Cuz you look dashing. I don’t want other guys lookin’ at me girl,” he said smiling. I shoved him lightly.
“Oh, they won’t.” I said. He made a face and nodded his head.
“Yes they will. No matter what you wear they will. I’m gonna go crazy.” He said. I shook my head.
“No, you’ll be fine. Davy was jealous too, but that never got to him,” I said opening the bathroom door to let out all the steam.
“I hate to admit it love, but I think I’m a bit more jealous than Davy,” he said making a face. I smiled.
“That’s okay, I kinda like how you are jealous. Just don’t get scary.” I said. He laughed.
“I don’t know, I’m a pretty scary guy,” he said. I laughed.
“Oh please,” I said. He frowned.
“Hey, I can be scary if I’m mad enough.” He said. I laughed.
“Sweetie, I don’t know about that. See John is scary, you’d just be….mad.” I said walking over to the bed, Paul following me.
“Ah, John’s not scary. You’ve never seen me really mad,” he said. I laughed.
“Right, that’s why all of you are scared of him.”
“Hey, I’m not scared. The others may be, but it’s always me or Brian that has to talk to him when he’s mad. And Brian’s even afraid then. I’ve known John a long time, I’m not scared of him.” He said.
“I suppose, but in general he’s scary when he’s mad.”
“Yes, that is true.”
“And you aren’t,” I said smiling. He came over to me and wrapped his arms around me.
“It makes me sad that you don’t think I’m scary,” he said, trying not to smile. I laughed.
“Fine, you’re horrible when you’re angry. Stay away from Paul!” I shouted laughing. He laughed.
“Thanks,” he said, “But really, I’m not that scary when I get mad.” I fell back onto the bed, hand on my forehead. Paul laughed.
“Would you make up your mind?!” I asked him, sitting up. He continued to laugh and sat next to me, picking up his guitar that was left lying next to the bed from the night before.
“I’m not, but I am jealous, just not scary jealous.” He said strumming.
“Good. What are you playing?” I asked him.
“Oh, are we going to do this again?” he asked smiling. He pretended to put the guitar down and I laughed.
“We just showered,” I said.
“Ah, I know…it’s nothing big I don’t think. Just a few tunes and maybe some lyrics in me head. I’m going to go over more of it with John today,” he said. I nodded.
“Is this going to be all brand new songs?” I asked. He shook his head.
“No, um, we talked about it yesterday and we’re going to put, Night Before, You’re Going to Lose That Girl, I Need You, Yesterday, I’ve Just Seen A Face, and Tell Me What You See on there. But that’s only what, six songs? We need at least fourteen.” He said.
“Wow, that’s a lot more.” I said. He shrugged.
“Yeah, like I said though, John’s been thinking of a few, I think George has another one, and I’ve got a few up here.” He said pointing to his head.
“Cool, I can’t wait to hear them,” I said. For next hour or so, I watched and listened to Paul work on the guitar and piano; enjoying every minute. At about 9:50am Paul left for the studio promising to call. I told him he didn’t have to but he insisted. I spent the afternoon watching TV, sitting outside in the garden, and then decided to call Brittany.
“Hello?” she answered.
“Hey, Brittany, it’s me Olivia,” I said.
“Olivia! Where the hell have you been?” she asked.
“Stuck in a room with Paul,” I said. There was a bit of silence on the other line.
“Yeah, Micky told me. I can’t believe you’re with Paul now,” she said.
“Why?” I asked, knowing this was to come.
“I don’t know. It’s just weird. I knew with George, it wasn’t that serious, but I’ve been able to tell there was something between you and Paul.”
“Really? But you were always against me going with him? This means you were going after him then when you knew I liked him! And that he might have liked me then!” I said to the brand new news. For some reason it made me somewhat angry. She and Paul were one of the main reasons I didn’t do anything with him. In fact, it was the reason I wasn’t able to sit next to him from the beginning. Who knows what would have happened then. She sighed.
“Yes yes! And I’m sorry.”
“You’re sorry?” I asked upset.
“Yes, it’s just hard you know. I mean, I knew that if you and Paul were to be together you would end up leaving the band, we had a little taste of that when you were with George. Then there was you and Davy. You guys were the couple. You know? And to think of you splitting up was horrible…” she said.
“So did you really like him, or were you doing that to keep him away from me?” I asked.
“Both. In the beginning I did it to keep you away from him. I realized that after I told you to dress nice for him and everything that maybe you shouldn’t have. Then I saw that little smile thing between you two at the concert, so, I decided to sit by him instead of you. I didn’t want him luring you in with his charm and end up screwing up you and Davy.” She told me. I was shocked. I always wondered why she did that.
“But Brittany I didn’t even know him then. Yeah, I was attracted to him, but-”
“Which is exactly why he would’ve got you, he’s your boyfriend now Olivia, and so you know his charm. Even I know it. It’s just that he usually gets what he wants, especially as far as girls and sex. Heck, after just sitting by him, he reeled me in pretty good, and I don’t usually fall for that crap. You’re not really around that kind of guy much, and being how you were so smitten with him, he would’ve got you just like that.” I heard her snap, “It’s the innocent ones that always fall for it.” She said. I was still speechless, “I’m sorry ‘Liv, but it had to be done,” she said. I shook my head.
“Maybe then, but afterwards? When you started seeing that Paul and I kinda started liking each other, you could’ve backed off then.”
“I still wasn’t sure what he wanted you for. He’s hard to tell, I wasn’t sure if that was still his game to try to nail ya,” I cringed. She was so flat out about everything, “Look, I know you think I’m somewhat of a snot sometimes, and I know you’ve said before that you don’t think I like you very much,”
“What? Who told you that?” I asked interrupting.
“Emily,” she said. I should’ve known, “I do like you Olivia. You’re one of my best friends. I even really like Em. I was just looking out for you.” She finished and my anger went away a bit.
“Well, I had no idea. I mean, you got in trouble with Micky a lot too,” I said.
“Yeah, well,” was all she said.
“Thanks, Brittany.”
“No problem. See, now you know for sure you two were meant to me, if I tried to stop it and it still happened.” She said laughing. I smiled.
“Very true, anytime you try to stop something it usually gets stopped.” I said.
“You know it.”
“So, how the band going? Anything new?” I asked and there was silence.
“Yes, we got a bunch of calls Olivia….” She said. Oh great, they probably replaced me like they did Paul.
“And?” I asked hesitantly. Being as popular of a band as The Beatles were, they had to bring Paul back in. But we weren’t so popular; I might be out for good.
“We had to replace you. A few places didn’t want us without you, but others thought we could find someone else and still be fine. Her name is Melanie….”
“Is this a joke Brittany?” I asked, feeling a little of what Paul was feeling.
“No, I wouldn’t joke about this. I couldn’t be the lead singer, we needed someone like you, and well, she’s like a frickin’ clone,” she said laughing a little.
“Hm, Davy will be fine then,” I said, still not believing that I was out of the band Davy and I started.
“Olivia, I’m so sorry. We had her only temporarily, but then you were gone longer and longer. That’s when Micky told us about you and Paul. We were shocked and I figured you wouldn’t be able to come back. I mean face it Olivia; it won’t work with you being in a relationship with Paul. He’s on the move all the time,” she said. And although I always kind of knew it, it really hit me now. I wouldn’t be able to have much of a job at all, or do anything really, “Are you going to live with him there in England?” she asked interrupting my thoughts. I nodded.
“Yeah, he wants me to.” I said.
“Do you want to?”
“Yes,” I said.
“Well, see, that makes it impossible. Even if you were living here, you’d never be here. On top of that, it would cost them a lot of money to fly you everywhere then home again. It kinda sucks. It’s either, have a job and never see Paul, or see Paul most the time and not have a job. I mean there’s times where you can’t be with him, but you can’t really have a job. So you’ll either be all by yourself or following him around everywhere….” She said. Again, that reality started sinking in more. When I was with George, it wasn’t really that strange. I think it’s because deep down I knew things probably weren’t going to last. It just was a lot different. I didn’t really see it as real, if that makes sense. It was more of an exciting thing and they weren’t even on tour much, nor were they working albums at that time because of all the weird things happening. Plus, I was still living at home. But this is totally different now. I’m in love with Paul and know things are probably going to last for quite a while. I’ll be living here in England with him, not my home in Malibu. Lastly, we just got back and he’s already gone working on a new album, movie, and a tour coming up in a little over a week. This was going to be my lifestyle for the rest of my life…..
“I won’t be here all the time. I’m going to visit you guys, you’re my best friends,” I said getting choked up.
“I know, and we hope you will. We miss you already; you’ll always be our best friend. But as far as the band, it won’t work Olivia.”
“I know,” I said sadly.
“You were great though. This girl is a lot like you, but she’s not really a close friend like you. We don’t really see her that much; she has her own little gang. And she doesn’t write as good of songs as you, nor sing as well. We’ll miss you in our band.” She said.
“Yeah, I’ll miss you guys, and singing in a band. I’ll miss singing in general. I didn’t realize how much I really liked it, till now.” I said.
“Why don’t you and Paulie start a little duo?” she said laughing and I laughed with her.
“Right, that’ll never happen,” I said, “He’s a big Beatle you remember,” I said. She laughed.
“I know, I was kidding around.” She said, “So are you at his house right now?”
“Yeah,”
“Is he there?”
“No, he’s at the studio working on their next album,” I said.
“That sounds weird for you to say that,” she said laughing. I smiled.
“I kinda thought that too, oh but hey, we’re coming to Malibu either tomorrow or the next day.” I told her.
“What?! Awesome, for how long?” she asked.
“I don’t know. It’s mostly so I can get my stuff and let Mr. Blavit know I’m moving out. Then I think we were going to head to Mexico,” I said.
“Mexico? For what?” she asked.
“Just for some Paul and I time. They replaced him too, but he’s able to join the tour again in two weeks. The other person, I don’t even know his name, is filling in for the first week. So, we thought we would just take a vacation in Mexico and then meet them in New Orleans, where Paul will take over.” I told her.
“Gosh you’re lucky! You’re going to go to so many places!” she said. I smiled.
“I know, I’ll take pictures everywhere and show you guys,” I said.
“That would be cool,” she agreed, “Hey, speaking of a ‘you and Paul vacation’….” She started and I knew what was coming, “Have you slept with him yet?” she asked nosey. I knew it.
“Brittany….” I said.
“What? Come on! It’s Paul McCartney, it’s a big deal! I’m a fan remember!” she said and I laughed.
“Fine, yes, I have.” I told her and she yelped.
“Oh my gosh! I can’t believe you!” she said.
“What? He is my boyfriend now,” I said once again thinking it was weird saying that. Talking to Brittany made my fanatic fan side come out oh my gosh, I had sex with Paul McCartney!
“I know, but it’s weird to think you’ve slept with him.”
“I agree, it’s weird for me to think it too actually.” I said.
“When did you first do it?” She asked. I rolled my eyes; a typical Brittany moment.
“Last night,” I told her.
“Are you serious?!”
“Yeah,”
“Holy, that was not long ago….So, how was it?” she then asked.
“Brittany!”
“Come on! Details, details, he’s a Beatle!” she said. I laughed.
“No…” I whined.
“Yes. At least say whether it was good or not,” she said. I sighed.
“It was really really really good!” I said laughing, and she burst out.
“Olivia Newton! That wasn’t one of the choices!”
“I know, but it was. It was excellent.” I said laughing again.
“I’m so jealous of you!” she laughed.
“Hey now, he’s still my boyfriend.” She laughed.
“Sorry, but I am. I’m not going to go after him, I love my Micky.”
“Good, cuz he’s mine,” I said and she laughed.
“So is he better than Davy?” she asked.
“What’s with all the sex questions?” I asked, embarrassed to be talking about it.
“It’s a big deal, you did it with Paul. I told you, details, details.”
“Yes he is, a lot,” I said feeling somewhat bad about saying that, but it was true, “If he ever knew I was talking about this with you he’ll think I’m crazy.” I said.
“Ah, no he won’t. He knows I'm a huge fan and it just so happens that you, my best friend, so happens to also be his girlfriend. He should know that you’re going to talk about him with us a little bit. Besides, I’m sure he’ll tell his buddies about it. Guys do that.” She said.
“Oh no,” I said not wanting the guys to know any details about Paul and I. As I said, I was always embarrassed about that stuff. To me it was just so personal, I hated telling Brittany, but she was my best friend. I already told Paul before we did anything, that I didn’t want him acting all nonchalant about our sex lives, like he had been with previous girl affairs of his; letting the guys just accidentally walk in or going and telling them anything about how it was. He promised me he wouldn’t, and that he didn’t want them to see or know about that anyway. He told me it was different now with me.
“Oh, relax. I know you like things personal, but I’m sure he’s saying good things about you.” She said.
“I hope so,” I said. I wondered what he would tell them, if he did. Just then I heard the door, and Martha barking. I listened to see who is was and heard Paul talking back to her, “Hey, I gonna go, Paul’s back. But I just wanted to call and see how you guys were and to tell you I’m coming over.” I said.
“Fine, leave me for Paul,” she said sarcastically. I laughed.
“Who you talking to?” I heard Paul say. I turned to him coming in the bedroom.
“Oh, Brittany,” I said.
“What?” Brittany said on the other line.
“Oh, nothing. Paul was asking who I was talking to.” I told her.
“Is he in the room with you?” she asked.
“Yeah,”
“HI PAUL!” Brittany shouted almost ruining my eardrums. I pulled the phone away from my ear. Paul laughed.
“Hey, Brittany,” he said up to the phone. He kissed me quick and went into the bathroom.
“Ooo, I heard that smooch.” She said. I laughed.
“Knock it off Brittany,” I said and she just laughed.
“Well, I’ll let you go off with your little honey bunny,” she said. I laughed and made a face.
“My little honey bunny?” I asked her. She laughed.
“Shut up, I couldn’t think of anything, and that’s the first thing that came to mind. But anyway, yeah, we’ll be home when you come to town, so you better drop by, even if Paul says no cuz he’s wants to go to Mexico and get it on with you!” She said laughing. I opened my mouth.
“Brittany!!” I said and she laughed some more.
“Just kidding, settle down.” She said and Paul came out of the bathroom. He smiled and laid on the bed, closing his eyes. I looked over at the clock and it was already 4:30pm! He was in the studio for almost 8 hours. He looked so worn out.
“Well, we will stop by, I’m sure he won’t say no.” I told Brittany.
“Alrighty,”
“Tell everyone else hi for me,”
“Oh I will, and sorry again about the band Olivia….” She said sounding very sympathetic. I smiled.
“It’s okay, you’re right. It wouldn’t work with me still in it anyway. It was right of you to get someone else.” I said, and almost immediately after Paul sat up and looked at me with concern.
“Alright, well bye bye Olivia,” she said.
“Bye Brittany,” I said and hung up the phone.
