Chapter 16

I rolled over and slowly opened my eyes. I looked at Paul and then at the clock. It was 1pm. I yawned and just as I closed my eyes again, there was a knock at my door. Confused, because no body knew we were here yet, I got up carefully. I didn’t have that big of an apartment, and it was set up in a different way. I really didn’t have a living room per say, my bedroom was basically what you walked into when you came in, then there was a little hallway leading to the kitchen and bathroom. I didn’t need any more than this when I moved here, and I was somewhat broke. It’s worked for me since, so I never thought to get something else. I moved from the bed and opened the door quietly. It was Micky, Brittany, Peter, and Emily.
“Hi!” Brittany shouted hugging me.
“Shhh,” I said turning and pointing to Paul. He moved but didn’t wake up.
“Oh whoops,” Brittany said laughing, as I motioned them to come in.
“How are you guys?” I asked them quietly as they found places to sit.
“Good, how are you? We haven’t seen you forever!” Emily said. I nodded.
“Oh I know. I’ve been really good actually.” I told them, “how did you know we were here?” I asked.
“We were leaving to meet these guys when we saw your door shut,” Peter said.
“Brittany told us how you were coming down, so we figured it had to be you guys,” Micky finished.
“Yeah, it actually feels really good to be back,” I said looking around my apartment.
“Are you going to miss it?” Brittany asked. I shrugged.
“Of course I will. It’s been my home for the last 3 years.” I said smiling. Brittany made a little face of agreement, “So, where is everybody else?” I asked.
“Well, Mike is at home working on songs and such, Sara is keeping him company,” Micky said then stopped. I continued to look at him waiting for him to finish, but he didn’t.
“And what about Davy?” I asked. They kinda looked at each other, “Well?” I asked again.
“He’s out on a date…” Micky said. I laughed.
“And why is that so bad? I’m glad for him,” I said honestly. They smiled.
“I don’t know, it’s just awkward,” Brittany said. I smiled.
“I understand,” I said, “Who is it? Anyone I know?” I asked.
“I don’t think so, her name is Vanessa,” Brittany informed me. I nodded.
“So, what have you guys been up to? Anything weird happening?” I asked. They all shook there heads.
“Nothing besides you and Davy,” Peter said, getting louder. I frowned as Paul moved and put my finger to my lips.
“Peter, Shh,” I said.
“Sorry,” he said quieting down again. Brittany rolled her eyes.
“Ah, I’m sick of being quiet, he can wake up,” she said getting up. I tried to get up and stop her, but she was too quick. She shoved him.
“Paul, wake up!” she yelled. He groaned and she pushed him again, “Paul!” she said again.
“I’m up, I’m up!” He said opening his eyes, “Brittany?” he asked then moved his eyes over to look at the rest of us. I shrugged and mouthed ‘I’m sorry’. He smiled and sat up.
“We were sick of being quiet,” Brittany explained sitting back down next to Micky. Paul laughed.
“So how is everybody?” he asked stretching and scooting himself to the edge of the bed.
“Good, yourself?” Brittany said. He nodded.
“Really good. When did you get here?” he asked as I walked over and sat next to him. He smiled.
“Oh, about 10 minutes ago,” Peter said. He turned to me.
“Did you call them?” I shook my head.
“No they saw us come in,” I told him.
“I see. So what are we going to do tonight?” he asked. We all just sat there. I wondered if he felt somewhat awkward. Usually it was him and the rest of the Beatles, but now he was the only one.
“I don’t know, food for sure. All of us,” Brittany said. I nodded.
“I was thinking something like that,” I said. Paul nodded.
“What till then?” he asked. Brittany frowned.
“Go back to bed,” she told him. He laughed.
“Hey, you woke me up,” he told her.
“I know, I know,” she said.
“Hold on,” Micky said getting up and walking over to the phone.
“Who are you calling?” I asked him.
“Mike,” he said, “Oh hey Davy,” he said into the phone. We sat there as Micky talked to Davy and Mike telling them to come over to my house to decide what’s on the agenda for today, and then hung up.
“They’re coming over.” He informed us.
“Cool,” Brittany said.
“How much room do you think I have?” I asked laughing, as Paul and I were already sitting on the bed. Where would three more people go? Micky laughed.
“Oh well, but hey, um, Davy’s bringing Vanessa is that okay?” he asked me and glanced at Paul. Paul looked at me.
“Who’s Vanessa?” he asked.
“Davy’s girlfriend?” I asked not sure if he was actually dating her. Micky nodded, so did Paul.
“Oh,” he said taking my hand. It was only a few minutes before there was a knock on my door.
“Let ‘em in will you?” I asked Emily sitting next to the door.
“Yeah,” she said opening it.
“Hey Olivia, hey Paul!” Mike said. Paul smiled.
“Hey, guys,” he said scooting over to make room. I smiled. Mike was first in the room followed by Sara, and then Davy and Vanessa. I was surprised, she was really pretty.
“Hi,” she said shyly holding on to Davy’s hand. He smiled back at her. She reminded me a lot of myself when I first began dating him. I smiled.
“Hi, make yourself at home if you can find room,” I said smiling. She laughed.
“Thanks,”
“Do you feel weird?” Emily blurted. We all looked at her.
“Who are you talking to?” Sara asked her.
“Paul,” she said.
“Me?” Paul asked. She nodded, “Why would I feel weird?” he asked.
“Because, you don’t have your buds here,” she said. Thanks for pointing out the obvious Em. He laughed a little.
“Nah, it’s not bad.” He said.
“Gal, Em,” Brittany said frowning. Emily made a face.
“I’m sorry to have to bring this up, but…you really are Paul McCartney aren’t you?” we all turned to Vanessa, even Davy. I side glanced to Paul and he smiled.
“Yes, I am,” he said. She smiled shyly.
“Do you mind, signing something for me?” she asked. He laughed.
“No not at all luv,” he said, “Brittany can you hand me a piece of paper and a pen?” She handed him the pen and paper and he begin signing it for her. I noticed Davy was looking at me funny.
“Hey, Olivia, can you come here for a second?” he asked. Paul stopped and looked up at Davy then at me. I looked at him.
“Sure, Davy,” I said standing up.
“I’ll be right back Vanessa,” he said leaving the room. She smiled. I wasn’t sure what was going on, but followed him out.
“What’s up Davy?” I asked as he walked to his apartment.
“I have something for you,” he said. I was still confused but followed him nevertheless. I followed him to his room which had changed completely. There wasn’t one picture of me in sight. He began digging in his drawer and pulled out a little picture frame.
“What is that?” I asked as he turned around. I saw it was the little picture of Paul and me. I looked up at him.
“How?” I started.
“Mr. Blavit said he was going to start removing your stuff next week and that if I knew of anything you might want to keep for sure in case you came back, that I was to get it out of your room.” He told me handing me the picture. I took it from him and just looked at it.
“Is this all you took?” I asked surprised that he would want to keep that for me. He nodded.
“Yeah,” was all he said, “I just wanted to give that to you before you leave or I forget.” He said. I walked over to him and hugged him. He returned my hug.
“Davy thank you so much,” I said holding the picture to my heart. He smiled.
“I know you love him, and he loves you, I knew it all along. I just didn’t want to admit it to myself.” He finally admitted. I smiled.
“I’m sorry I made you go through everything,” I said shaking my head. He smiled again.
“Oh, it’s alright. It was for the best, you were right,” he told me. I hugged him again.
“What’s going on here?” I heard someone say. I let go of Davy and turned to the door. Peter and Micky stood in the door way.
“Oh, I was giving Olivia her picture,” Davy said. Micky nodded.
“Well, come on. We decided on lunch,” Peter said. I smiled.
“Okay,” I said leaving the room. I walked out into the main area and walked over to Paul. He smiled.
“I love you,” I said quietly as I kissed him. Afterwards he smiled.
“I love you too,” he said, “What’s this for?” he asked. I shrugged.
“Just cuz,” I said, “Now let’s go eat.” We all left for a nice lunch and talked about a bunch of things. We all got to know Vanessa and she seemed like a really nice girl. I was really happy for Davy; he seemed to really like her. Maybe she’s what he’s needed all this time. After lunch we all just walked downtown and talked.
“Hey, Brittany,” Paul said suddenly. Brittany looked over at him and then nodded slightly.
“Hey, Paul and I are going to go back to one the stores back here, you guys keep going.” Brittany said. I looked up at Paul.
“Where are you going?” I asked him.
“Yeah, where are you guys gonna go?” Micky asked.
“There was a music store back here, and I asked Paul earlier if he would show me some good finger picks for the bass. We’ll be right back,” She said. I looked at Paul confused.
“It’ll just be minute love,” he said kissing me.
“C’mon Paul,” Brittany said. He nodded and I watched as they walked back a couple stores down.
“That was weird,” I said. Micky nodded.
“Tell me about it,” he said. We continued to walk, finally stopping and sitting on a bench. Paul and Brittany were taking a while so we decided just to wait for them. After a few more minutes, they arrived.
“What took so long?” Peter asked complaining. Brittany frowned.
“Oh settle down Peter,” she said. Paul walked over to me. I smiled looking suspiciously at him. He laughed.
“What’s that look for love?” he asked putting his arms around me.
“I don’t know about you,” I said. He laughed again and leaned down to kiss me. I noticed Davy looking at us.
“Did you even find a pick?” Sara asked. Brittany shook her head.
“No, he was just showing me them, so when I had money I knew what to get.” She said. It was about 5pm and we all decided to go home, not sure what we were going to do for the rest of the evening. Paul followed me inside my apartment.
“So, what did Davy want earlier?” he asked as I set down my purse. I dug inside and took out the little picture.
“He wanted to give me this,” I said. Paul looked confused.
“Why did he have it?”
“I guess Mr. Blavit was going to get rid of my stuff next week and told Davy to come get anything he knew I would want to keep. He found it and knew I would want it.” I said, Paul walked towards me. He put his arms around my waist.
“That was nice of him I guess,” he said. I nodded.
“Yeah, that probably took a lot for him to do something like that. I was surprised.” I said. Paul nodded, “What was going on with you and Brittany earlier?” I asked. He walked away from me and sat down to take off his shoes.
“What do you mean? We checked out that music store,” he said taking off his second boot.
“Yeah, well, it was kinda suspicious,” I said setting the picture down on my nightstand and lying down on the bed. Paul laid back next to me.
“No it wasn’t.” he said smiling. I laughed.
“Whatever,” I said. Paul tickled me.
“Don’t whatever me,” he said and I tried to roll away from him, laughing. He grabbed a hold of me and pulled me towards him.
“You’re so mean to me,” I said. He laughed.
“Oh, poor baby,” he said and I laughed. He leaned over and kissed me just as the phone rang. He rolled his eyes and let go of me so I could answer the phone.
“Hello?” I asked.
“So you made it back alright aye?” I heard John say on the other line. I laughed.
“Yes, we’re fine. Why would you think otherwise?” I asked him.
“I don’t know. Is Paul there?” he asked.
“Sure, hold on,” I said, “It’s for you,” I told Paul. He opened his eyes.
“For me?” he asked sitting up, “who is it?”
“Mr. Lennon,” I said handing him the phone. He nodded and I remembered that the last time they talked was when Paul tore into John. I sat on my bed silent as Paul talked, seeming normal. Their conversation was neither interesting, nor very long. Paul hung up and came back next to me.
“What was that all about?” I asked.
“Nothing,” he said. I pulled back and looked at him.
“What is with you and secrets lately?” I asked. He laughed and brought me against him again.
“What secrets? I don’t know what you’re talking about you crazy bird.” He said. I laughed.
“Whatever,” I said again. Paul opened his eyes and I quickly moved away from him laughing.
“What did you say?” he asked smiling.
“Nothing,” I said giggling.
“That’s what I thought, now come here,” he said motioning me back over to him. I scooted close to him and kissed him, “That’s better,” he said smiling.
“I’m gonna miss this place,” I said laying and looking at my room. Paul looked around.
“You can stay if you want,” he said. I turned to him.
“Don’t be daft,” I said and he laughed.
“Hey what time is it?” Paul asked. I turned behind me and looked at the clock.
“About 5:45pm, why?” I asked. He sat up, and walked over to his suitcase. He opened it and pulled out a box. He handed it to me.
“What is it?” I asked him as he sat on his heels in front of me
“Open it,” he said. I looked at him still not sure what was up. I flipped the top up and my mouth fell open. I looked up at him. He smiled.
“Do you like it?” he asked, getting up and sitting next to me, “Pattie told me you loved it the other day when you were shopping, but were too afraid to spend your money on it. You didn’t think you’d wear it any where.” He said. I looked back down and pulled out the gift, and held it up in front of me. Paul moved the box off my lap. It was an eggshell white satin dress, completed with rhinestones. The entire front was made of floral lace with rhinestone accents. The sleeves, also outlined in rhinestones, were just a thick shoulder strap exposing the majority of the shoulder and the entire arm. It was pleated around the waist and flared into an A-line floor length hem, training a little in the back. It was so beautiful. I turned to Paul.
“I love it,” I said and leaned over to kiss him, “I just don’t know where I would wear it…” I said. He smiled.
“You could wear it tonight,” he said. I looked at him.
“Tonight?” I asked. He nodded.
“Yeah, being it was kinda your last day here, I made reservations for one of your favorite restaurants I’m told. You could wear it there,” he said. I smiled and set down the dress. I touched Paul’s face and leaned over to kiss him, yet again.
“I love you,” I whispered inches away from his face. He kissed me again.
“And I love you,” he said. I looked back at the dress.
“When are the reservations for?” I asked him. He looked at his watch.
“Um, they’re at 7:30, so we should start getting ready,” he said standing up. He held out his hand and I took it standing in front of him. I picked up the dress and went into the bathroom. I shut the door and just stared at it. This dress was a fortune, and Paul bought it for me. I smiled thinking how lucky I really was to have him. I hung the dress on a hook on the back of the door and plugged in my curling iron. I brushed my hair back pinning the top half up. I curled the ends making it flip out. Next I put on some white sparkling eye shadow followed by eye liner, mascara, and a light pink blush. I curled my lashes and I looked at the clock and it was already 6:45pm. If Paul was indeed taking me to my favorite restaurant, it took about 20 minutes to get there, meaning I had to hurry. I brushed my teeth quickly and put on some perfume. I unzipped the dress and slipped it on. It was a perfect fit. I zipped up the back and looked at myself in the mirror. I reached over to my jewelry box and pulled out the French diamond and sapphire set The Beatles gave me for Christmas and put them on. I finished with a light pink lip gloss. Perfect, I thought to myself. I opened the bathroom door and as I walked down the hallway I could see Paul sitting on the bed watching TV, still in his regular clothes. I suppose it doesn’t take a guy half as long as it takes a girl, but this was Paul. As I entered the room Paul looked over at me and then did a double take. He shut off the TV and stood up.
“Wow, you look incredible,” he said walking over to me. I smiled and did my curtsy. Paul laughed.
“Thank you, it fits perfectly,” I said giving him a quick kiss as to not ruin my lip gloss nor get it all over his lips. He looked me over again and nodded. I smiled.
“Don’t you need to get ready? It’s five to seven,” I said.
“Yeah, I suppose,” he said, “Wow, you’re so beautiful,” he said again. And once again I smiled, “That jewelry looks fantastic on you.” He added.
“Thank you, I love all of it.” I said, “Now go get ready,” I hurried him. He smiled, grabbed the hanging suitcase, and went into the bathroom. He took about 15 minutes and came out. He was wearing a black suit with a white shirt and a shimmering white tie that matched my dress. I always saw him in suits, but tonight he looked amazing. I smiled at him as he came out.
“You look very handsome,” I said pulling on his tie and kissing him quick. He smiled.
“Thanks doll,” he said. He bowed his head and held out his hand. I laughed.
“Can I help you kind sir?” I asked him. He lifted his head and looked at me.
“I was wondering ma’am, if you would do me the honors of accompanying me to The French Poodle,” he said. I smiled.
“I would,” I said taking his hand. He smiled and stood up, kissing the top of my hand.
“Shall we?” He asked. I nodded and he opened the door for me. We walked outside, where it was gorgeous. Not even a little bit chilly. As we exited the building there was a white limo waiting for us. I smiled and turned to Paul.
“Are you serious?” I asked him. He nodded, again opening the door for me. He took my hand and helped me in. I felt like a princess! He shut the door and walked around to the other side getting in himself. He sat close to me and I took his hand.
“You’re doing this all because it’s my last night living here?” I asked. He smiled and kissed my cheek.
“What can I say, I love my girl,” he said. I grinned. I loved him more than anything in the world.
“I love my man,” I said and he laughed. We drove the twenty minutes to The French Poodle and arrived exactly at 7:30. Not a minute before or after. Paul helped me out of the limo and I held onto his arm as we followed another couple to the entrance. The lady ahead of me had a beautiful black dress, and jewels everywhere. She looked happy, but I didn’t care about any of that. Granted, I loved the dress and the jewelry, but most of all I loved Paul. And he’s all that mattered to me, nothing else.
“McCartney,” Paul said as the gentlemen asked for our name. It was nice going to a restaurant like this, because we didn’t have to worry about people bothering Paul. The man nodded and led us to our table or booth really. It was one of those round booths in the corner and it was set up beautifully. In all truth, I had only been here one other time and it was when my parents came down to visit me years ago. But ever since then I’ve just loved it. I was very impressed with the food and service, and the interior was gorgeous. I also enjoyed dressing up for this type of thing. The whole problem was that it was probably the most expensive restaurant in this part of California.
“This is wonderful,” I told Paul after the waiter left with our orders. Paul smiled and slid closer to me, again, taking my hand underneath the table. We sat watching the many different couples, “What a lifestyle. Coming to a place like this all the time,” I said. Paul nodded.
“Yeah, you can now you know,” he said looking at me. I laughed.
“I would feel so out of place, I don’t fit in with these people.” I said. Paul frowned.
“Of course you do. You’re the most beautiful and rich girl here. All they have is money and fancy things. You have so much more.” He said. I kissed him, smiling. We sat a little longer before our food came out. We ate and before desert they cleared a space in the front of the room.
“What’s going on?” I asked not ever seeing this before. Paul shrugged.
“I don’t know,” he said. A band all dressed in white tuxes, shuffled out onto the stage and began playing those very familiar forty and fifties love songs. Couples around the restaurant moved their way to the front and began swaying together. Paul stood up.
“Would you like to dance with me?” he asked holding out his hand. I smiled and took it.
“I’d love to,” I said as we walked to the front. I noticed a few people look at us and whisper, but it wasn’t that big of a deal. They probably recognized Paul, but weren’t going to do anything. We danced and as the previous song ended a new one began. It was ‘I’ll Be Seeing You’; another one of my favorites. I leaned in closer to Paul and closed my eyes, moving back and forth against him. He rested his head against mine and I could hear him breathing softly.

“….I’ll be seeing you, in every lovely summer’s day.
In everything that’s light and gay, I’ll always think of you that way.
I’ll find you, in the morning sun, and when the night is new,
I’ll be looking at the moon, but I’ll be seeing you….”

As the song finished, Paul dipped me and people around us clapped. I smiled and leaned closer to Paul, looking around, as the band began the next song. This was more fun than I’ve had in a long time. When I turned back to Paul he was holding a little white box with a gold ribbon. I looked up at him confused. He smiled.
“Happy Birthday love,” he whispered, and my heart stopped. I thought for a second and realized, it was my birthday.... With everything that has been going on, I wasn’t even paying attention to the days. None of the others seemed to remember, so it didn’t even cross my mind. But Paul remembered…..I covered my mouth with my hand as tears came to my eye. He smiled.
“Go on, open it,” he said. I looked up at him and took my hand away from my mouth. I took the little box and undid the perfectly tied bow. I opened it and inside was what appeared to be a ring box. I paused and looked up at him. He smiled and nodded back down to it. I opened it and again covered my mouth with my hand. Inside sat a little silver ring. In the middle was a heart with a diamond in the center, and two little diamonds on either side. I took it out of the box and just looked at it. As I turned it around to look at the back, a tear slipped down my cheek. Engraved on the back was, “Dreams do come true…” and on the inside of the ring it finished, “All my love, all my life. I Love You, Paul.”
“It’s a promise ring,” he said. As another tear fell down my cheek, I looked up at Paul and smiled. He smiled. I stood on my tip toes and hugged him tight.
“Oh, I love you so much,” I whispered in his ear.
“I love you Olivia,” he said and pulled back to kiss me. We kissed for a few moments before pulling away. Paul took the ring from me and put it on my left ring finger.
“I know it might be early to give this, but I’ve loved you for so long, and it only grows stronger and stronger. So I couldn’t wait until a normal time to give it,” he said smiling shyly. I smiled as more tears of love and joy fell. I told him months ago that I thought it would be so romantic to get a promise ring with something romantic engraved on the back of it. Again, as amazing as he was, he remembered. I shook my head.
“I don’t care about the timing, I love it. I love you!” I said smiling and hugging him again. He smiled big. Once more, a few people began clapping. I don’t know if they thought that we just got engaged or what, but it didn’t matter to me. This was just as special as being engaged. We danced to one more song and then shared dessert. Afterwards, the white limo picked us up and Paul helped me in. Once he was in the driver headed off towards my house.
“This is what I was showing Brittany earlier,” he said. I looked at him.
“Are you serious?” I asked. He nodded and smiled.
“Yeah, I wanted to get her opinion on it. To see if she thought you would like it. First she felt horrible for forgetting your birthday,” he paused making one of those ‘I’m sorry’ faces. I shrugged it off, and he continued, “she said it was perfect, and even cried.” He finished laughing. I smiled.
“She cried?” I asked surprised. He nodded.
“She said it was incredibly romantic,” he said. I smiled and snuggled close to him, kissing him.
“It was. First you give me the best Christmas of my life, and now you’ve given me the best birthday,” I said holding his hand. He kissed me and smiled.
“Well I love you, and you deserve it.” He said. I smiled.
“Well, you’re in for a treat when we get home now,” I whispered to him smiling. He raised his eyebrows.
“Really now? What kind of treat?” he asked. I shrugged innocently.
“I won’t be in this dress for very long, that’s for sure,” was all I said and once again he raised those eyebrows.
“Driver can you go a little faster please?” He shouted, and I hit him lightly laughing. He smiled and laughed, “I’m just joking love. But really, happy 20th birthday,” he said kissing me on the forehead and squeezing my hand lightly. Wow, I was finally twenty. No more teenager, however I somehow knew Paul and John would still make fun of my age.
“Thank you,” I said. When we got home, there was a little light on my answer machine. I pushed the button.
“Hey Olivia, HAPPY 20th BIRTHDAY!!!! FROM US!” I heard everyone shout. I laughed, “Sorry we forgot your birthday hon. We swear we’ll make it up to you!” Brittany said, “We promise,” Emily added, “Hope your night with Paul was romantic, and don’t stay up to late!” she finished in that sing song voice and laughing. The machine beeped. I smiled and Paul came behind me wrapping his arms around me and kissing the side of my neck.
“That was nice of them,” he said resting his head on my shoulder. I nodded, and turned my body so I was facing Paul. Since I wasn’t wearing heels anymore, I really had to stand on my tip toes to kiss him. We stood there for only a few minutes before making our way onto the bed. We removed our good clothes before crawling under the covers, as to not ruin them, and the rest is history. We made love that night, ending everything perfectly. I lay looking at my ring one last time before cuddling closer in Paul’s arms.
“Goodnight, thanks again for everything,” I whispered to Paul. He kissed my bare shoulder.
“You’re welcome,” he said.
