Chapter 7

When I opened my eyes the next day, the sun was shining into the room. I turned my head slightly behind me to see if Paul was still sleeping. Sure enough, he was. As comfortable as I was in Paul’s arms, I needed to go to the bathroom. I carefully raised Paul’s arm from around my waist and placed it in front of him. I pulled the covers a bit more over him, since I was still wearing his shirt. He moved slightly but then situated. I got up and thankfully the door was open. When I came back Paul was still sound asleep on the bed. Instead of joining him, I decided to look at one of the many Beatle books in the room. I grabbed the first one and just skimmed through till I found something interesting. As I flipped towards the middle, I saw the words Jane Asher. I didn’t even know her, and I’m sure she was as nice as she was beautiful, but seeing her name or hearing Paul or anyone else talk about her, bothered me. It only reminded me that she had such a long relationship with him, and it made me jealous to think she got all those years with him. I just hoped I would have just as many if not longer. I turned and looked to Paul to see if he was still sleeping. He was, so I turned back to the book and began reading.

Jane Asher, appearing on Simon Dee’s BBC Television show Dee Time, said that her engagement with Paul was off-but that it was not she that had broken it. She told Dee that they had been engaged for seven months, after knowing each other for years. She said she had arrived back at Paul’s home on Cavendish Avenue one day to find Paul in bed with a girl named Francie Schwartz.

My mouth dropped open. Paul had told me that they broke up because she was gone all the time and things just didn’t seem to work out. He never mentioned anything about him cheating on her and her catching him red handed in his bed! My eyes burned as angry and sad tears began forming. It wasn’t even long ago that he said ‘I would never cheat on you. I was with Jane for five years and I never cheated on her.’ I closed my eyes to keep the tears from coming. He lied to me. He flat out lied.
“Hey, love, what are you doing?” I heard Paul’s voice from behind me. I pulled my self together and shut the book. I turned around.
“Nothing, just looking at these books,” I said putting it back.
“Oh,” he said, “How long have you been up?”
“Not very long,” I said shortly. I brought my knees up to my chest and rested my head in them. I heard Paul move and soon his hand was on my shoulder.
“Are you alright love?” he asked sitting down in front of me. I brought my head up to look at him.
“No, not really,” I said.
“Well, what is it?” he asked again.
“I was reading that book there,” I said turning and looking at the book on the dresser. He looked up at it as well.
“Oh?” he said clearly confused.
“Why did you lie to me?” I asked him. He moved his head back in surprise.
“What? I’ve never lied to you, Olivia,” he said.
“You just did again,” I told him.
“Olivia, would you just tell me what you are talking about?” he asked taking his hand off of my shoulder and looking at me with confusion.
“Why didn’t you tell me that Jane caught you in bed with another girl and that’s why you broke up?” I said. His face turned a lighter shade. I continued, “You said that you never cheated on her.” I finished. I felt a tear slide down my cheek.
“Olivia, I didn’t lie, I just didn’t tell you,” he started. I laughed.
“Paul don’t give me that crap. You told me flat out that you broke it off cuz she was never around and things weren’t working, and you told me that you were with Jane for five years and never cheated on her.” I said, “That qualifies as lying to me.” He sat quiet, “I don’t know why I believed you,” I said shaking my head and laughing in disbelief at myself.
“Because I was telling you the truth,” he said, “I would never cheat on you. I lo-”
“Don’t say that you love me,” I told him. His faced dropped in sadness.
“But I do,” he said softly, and with that I began crying more, “Olivia please don’t cry.”
“Why? Is this supposed to make me happy?” I asked him sarcastically.
“No, of course not, but it’s not what you think. Things were extremely complicated with Jane and I. It was pretty much over before that happened…” he said.
“You were just engaged!” I said.
“I know that, and I asked her because I thought that’s what it would take to keep her. But she obviously didn’t want me anymore. She was never around, and when she was, I wasn’t. Things started falling apart long before we were even engaged. It was like our last try to make things work. But they didn’t.” he said.
“And you just couldn’t wait to break it off with her before you slept with another girl?” I asked.
“What if we were in here for over a year,” he said suddenly.
“Paul what does this have to do with anything?” I asked.
“Everything. What if we were in here for over a year, and this bloody guy finally let us sleep together. Would you?” he asked. I still didn’t understand.
“What?” I asked.
“Would you sleep with me if we were in here for over a year,” he said again.
“Of course,” I said.
“But you haven’t officially broke it off with Davy,” he said finally making his point. I looked at him. He was right. He got me.
“But I’m in love with you Paul, did you love Francie?” I asked.
“No, but I was definitely into her for more than sex.” He said. I didn’t know what else to say about that. He was right. I would do the same thing to Davy.
“Fine, but why did you have to lie to me?” I asked, now sad more than angry. That he had no excuse for.
“I shouldn’t have. You’re right and, love, I’m so sorry. It’s just that, I knew you were having some doubts about me, and if I told you that then, you’d never have believed me when I said I would never do something like that.” He said.
“Were you ever going to tell me then?” I asked.
“Of course! I wasn’t going to keep it from you forever, it’s just that it wasn’t the right time to tell you.” He said, “Olivia, I love you so much; even more than I ever loved Jane. And I promise you, I’m not lying.” He said sadly. I looked into his eyes and something told me he wasn’t lying. I cried now just because. There really wasn’t a reason. Paul reached out for me hesitantly. I scooted myself over into his arms and once again rested my head on his chest.
“Love, I’m so sorry. I’ll never do that again.” He said.
“It’s alright.” I said, “I love you.” He kissed my head.
“And I love you,” he replied.

After the drama of the day, we decided just to cuddle and watch TV. Paul was flipping through the channels when he stopped.
“What the heck is this?” I asked as I looked at the screen. It had to guys in a car smoking very oversized joints, smoke everywhere. Paul laughed.
“Cheech and Chong, duh,” he said still laughing as he pointed at the screen, that now said Cheech and Chong on it.
“Thanks,” I said laughing a bit. The show continued and all it was, was these two guys smoking pot and being high. I think they were permanently like that. Paul thought it was pretty funny. He would though, being a pot smoker.
“You like this?” I asked scrunching my nose. He looked down at me.
“Yeah, it’s pretty funny. You don’t?” he asked. I shook my head.
“I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’m not really into the pot/getting high scene.” I said.
“I know you aren’t, but you have to admit, this is funny. You don’t have to smoke pot to think people are funny when they’re stoned.” he said as he laughed at something on the screen. I shrugged. He looked back down at me, “Do you want me to change the channel?” he asked.
“No, that’s fine.” I said. He shook his head.
“No, I will,” he said as he reached for the remote. I grabbed his hand and brought it back down, and held onto it.
“No, seriously, this is fine.” I said kissing his cheek. He wasn’t satisfied, but didn’t do anything to get away from my hold. I wasn’t really paying attention, so I didn’t really know what was going on. But then again, it was just two stoned guys, what else could there be to understand? As we watched, Paul laughed every once and a while. And I have to admit, it was slightly funny. I started to pay attention just as one of the guys walked out in his tightey whities.
“Uh,” I said wrinkling my nose. Paul laughed.
“Don’t you like Chong in his underwear?” he asked. I glared up at him.
“No, just my Paulie.” I said then smiling. He smiled in return and kissed me quick. When we returned back to the movie, the funniest part (I thought) happened. As Chong, I guess, was walking across the kitchen or something he started singing ‘Good Day Sunshine’. But it was hilarious, because as Paul said, he was stoned. I burst out laughing, as did Paul.
“That was funny!” I said still laughing.
“See, it’s not that bad.” He told me smiling.
“Yeah, I guess. I think you should start singing your songs high though.” I told him.
“Oh you think?” he asked playing along. I nodded.
“It would sound much better.” I said as we laughed. We finished the movie, which wasn’t that bad, but Paul kept giving me grief about it.
“I already told you, you were right!” I said as he tickled me.
“I know, I just like to hear you admit that I was right.” He said smiling. I made a face at him and pushed him lightly.
“Well, just because I thought that that movie was slightly funny,” I started smiling. Paul rolled his eyes, “Doesn’t mean that I want you to get high all the time. I’m still not a fan of marijuana.” I told him. He smiled and nodded
“I know that love, and I won’t. I don’t really anyway. Mostly just with the guys.” He said.
“Oh, only with the guys huh? I spose that isn’t that much, I mean, you’re never with them.” I said sarcastically.
“You little smart ass,” he said laughing as he started tickling me again.
“Ah, Paul stop!” I said laughing, trying to get away from his grip “I’m sorry, I’m sorry!” I yelled through more laughter.
“Good,” he said smiling and stopping. He pulled me close to him as he kissed me. I melted in his arms and kissed back strongly. As you might have guessed, once again we headed in the direction of ‘the usual’. It seemed nicer than normal though, because it was also a little make up session for the day’s earlier events. I loved Paul and I now love make ups!
